Hi there. I'm a long time Firefly fan (back from when it ran on Fox) but I'm new to the world of Buffy.

I just bought the full series on DVD and I am rapidly working my way through it. However, I have a question which I can't seem to find any info on. After Buffy died in 'The Gift', how come no new slayer appeared? Was this because Faith was still alive? However, Faith is a creature of evil (yeah I know she is saved by Angel - I'm watching those episodes also via NetFlix), so does she count?

Anyway, I was just wondering if people had thoughts about this.

- Rich

It's never addressed on-screen, but around that time (early S6-ish) in an interview some of the writers explained that the mojo that causes the activation of each new slayer passed to Kendra after Buffy died, then to Faith when Kendra was killed. So as far as the mystical forces that control the thing are concerned, Faith is the one and only slayer (how she chooses to use those powers doesn't matter)...

Groo's right.

After Buffy "dies" in 1.13 Prophecy Girl, Kendra becomes the next Slayer. But Xander brings Buffy back via the CPR thing, so that wonks the line. Essentially, Buffy is the anomoly to the Slayer line.

After Kendra dies, the line moves through Faith. So Faith (no matter her "alignment") is the one who would have to die before the new Slayer is chosen.

Buffy's death in The Gift is inconsequential then in the whole Slayer line. It's part of the schtick that Buffy's role as Slayer is completely altered, because she does things so different - most Slayers don't have time for relationships with anyone like Buffy, and having friends to save/fight with her is not in the Watcher Handbook.

IKIYO.

Were you asking me? Because yes, I have--but since it sounded like the original poster hadn't, I was trying to stay spoiler-free.

Oh my, I hadn't picked up on that! (hides face in shame)

Sorry Rich! So to get back into Season 5/6 mind set....
yes, Buffy's 'replacement' has already been called...
only Faith counts now (a Slayer going 'bad' doesn't knock her out of the pantheon)

And Faith is being a good girl in jail...
remember when Angel goes to check on her and has to confess that he had to sing for Loren?

It is definitely good to keep up with the 'Angel' episodes because there will be interaction again when you get to Buffy's Season 7 and Angel's Season 4!

These are such great shows, it makes me happy that Firefly/Serenity fans are discovering them.

You're hereby sentenced to say 5 "If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really-real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone who?"s...

I just loved SMG as the Buffybot! Such a wonderful, funny, performance...

So I hope Rich is enjoying season 6, because I really really loved a lot about it

The only time she ever came close to being as consistently funny over the length of an episode (as opposed to just a great line here or there: "And afterwards I get a cookie") was as CaveSlayer. "Want more singing! Want more beer!"

yes, that was one of the things I loved about 'Bear Bad' - Buffy was VERY funny in that...

but I thought she was pretty hilarious in 'Pangs' too, she was kind of constantly channeling Martha Stewart and forgetting about her slayer duties....

Oh and 'Something Blue' was pretty hysterically funny too!

You can see why I like Season 4 so much.
