The pilot episode after taking on Simon, Shepard Book, and the lawman chasing the Tam's as passengers. They are all having their first meal together when Jayne makes some pretty crude comments directed at Kaylee. Mal in anger orders him away from the table and Simon asks what Jayne's job on the ship is.

(Simon)"him (referring to Jayne), what is his job on this ship"

(Mal) "public relations"

Final scene of BDM; Mal in pilot's chair, River in co-pilot's chair, (expertly) flying the ship.

MAL (to River): ....You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

RIVER: (smiles)

That passage brings everything full-circle that was started so beautifully in OiS: River loved that ship, and considered it a home. Just wanted to be a part. Mal knew she was a liability from the start, but could never turn his back on her, no matter how great a liability she became.

River is finally home; she smiles. Then --

RIVER: Storm's getting worse.
MAL: We'll pass through it soon enough.

And that, more than anything sums up the theme of that ship, that crew, that home, and the relationship between Mal and River.
