Here's a place for authors to ask those odd little questions that aren't big enough for their own thread. Any facts or opinions are welcome.
I'll start...
How does the Serenity crew do laundry?

They have a very efficient washing machine that uses a small amount of water vapor and silver ions.

I remember one time there was a discussion over where a washer.dryer would be on Serenity. The general consensus is that there is a cubby to one side of the galley (not the airlock) where a stacked w/d could fit.

With a spaceship, of any size, they have to carry everything with them, including air and water. If they make frequent stops on planets to replenish, then they could have an luxury like a washer/dryer. Otherwise the story link has a pretty good idea, dry cleaning. Can't waste drinking water just to wash clothes.

I don't have a link, but I remember a fic where Wash liked Simon's laundry shifts the best, because he always gave back Wash's Hawaiian shirts ironed and on hangers.

Great ideas, guys. The dry-cleaning one, though an interesting idea, doesn't quite fit with my idea of Serenity. It seems to be a nice mix of high-tech and low-tech, efficiency and wastefulness. I imagine that they have a great water recycling system, too. I just mentioned laundry in my story without naming specifics...always a handy way of doing things.

The dry-cleaning just doesn't settle right with me. I don't know why, it just doesn't fit.
My pet theory is that they have a washer/dryer, smallish and stacked in a corner somewhere, and there'd have to be some sort of a water tank, and probably filters, so some water would be diverted for washing, then the dirt would be filtered out of the water and it would rejoin the water tank. The dirt could be flushed out to space.
Another nitty question: We see a toilet in one of the episodes, but does the waste get flushed out into space, or would there be a sewage tank somewhere that gets dumped out on land?

Well, NASA when planning for future Mars missions, had at least at one point considered creating a system where astronauts' waste would be recycled back into drinking water, and I could swear also fertilizer for growing food or to supplement the fuel or something odd like that.
Water at any rate is too precious to waste. The waste matter would be filtered out, I would think, and the water would go back into the main supply. Can't imagine it would be much different for laundry water, really.
Of course, ya'll are assuming they use a washing machine that uses water, they could just use sonic vibrations or something. Hell, all you really need is the right kind of radiation to get rid of the dangerous bacteria (which would also often be smelly bacteria, as I recall). Or maybe they have partly self-cleaning clothes, which do exist now, and may be considerably less expensive a few hundred years from now. :P

I think there is a smallish washer and dryer able to do small loads but for big ones,,,you wait until you land and use a cleaner. I bet there are lots of cheap. quick ones near the Eavesdown docks.
If I remember correctly, the RPG says that the waste water is recycled and the solids are compacted to be off loaded in port.(Sort of like an RV system). It's included in the port charges. I imagine that it's Jayne's job most of the time. And he hates it.
