O_O how dare you phaser me. that film was just not as good as the other STs made that decade.
as for 2001 Space Odyssey, i thought that was a cool movie when i was a kid. for some reason the whole computer talking to the hologram of the dude who was sucked into the monolith thing blew me away. what HAPPENED to him anyway? I've always wondered about that....

and no it wasn't the best film of that decade, it was made in 1979. anyone remember what ELSE came out in 1979 that was infinitely better? I do, and I wasn't even born yet.

Sorry, I misunderstood; I was referring to the 2004 "Crash" directed by Paul Haggis. Never seen Cronenberg's "Crash," though if it's anywhere near as boring as "Spider" or "Eastern Promises," I think I'll pass.
"Requiem" I loved because it was, at least from my viewpoint, more about self-delusion leading to one's inevitable ruin than about "saying no to drugs." These four characters have their own goals, but no matter how much they reach, or how hard they push each other, they never get what they want most, and so they cling desperately to their fantasies even as their world crumbles around them. It's something that really resonates emotionally, at least for me.
Every time I watch Ellen Burstyn's monologue, I shed a tear.

so what came out in '79 that was better? Star Wars was '77, Superman was '78...Alien was '79, so was Black Hole, but I like ST:TMP better than them both!

There is a sequal, based on the book. 2010 The Year We make Contact. Movie - eh, book excellent!
EDIT: Chrisisall, While I like ST:TMP, I would rather watch Alien or Black Hole. Alien is creepifying, and Black Hole has been a favorite of mine since it came out(probably cause I was a young un). Vincent is still my favorite wisecracking robot.

It's a 2003 film based on Stephen King's novel of the same name. While King's novel is pretty well-done, it just translated horribly to the big screen. And it was written and directed by Lawrence Kasden, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, so I was expecting someone at least... good.
