I can sympathyze. My folk gave me the uncommon spelling "Tracie" instead of the usual "Tracy". Needless to say, I even have relatives who still can't spell it right on cards and such.

I just have to add, in the Asian culture, espically in Hong Kong and China, young men and women are encouraged to choose western names in order to function more effectively in dealing with western business, I am employed by an Asian company and frequent Hong Kong and China and here are some of the names i have heard, and know from y travels

Mr. Constant Lee
Mr. Elvis Ho
Mr. Frank Lee

Many other are just off the wall but some should have had guidance when picking their names.

Well my niece is only 2 so she doesn't care. It probably bothers me the most. It kinda annoys my sister a bit as well.

I guess I'll have to concur with desktophippie there. Nicknames are going to happen, regardless of what the people thinking up the name intended. It's like trying to control the weather, impossible and frustrating, so it's better to just give up. *g*

When I was growing up in Boise, there was a car dealership, family owned, who's name was Wolfe. Their adult sons, who did the ads on TV - Timber and Grey.
Also, you want to see some wierd names - check out this link. Found it years ago. I'm not saying that Utah has wierder names than most, just not as well documented.

I hear that one. Doesn't happen as often as it did in grade school, but I often have people asking me what my full name is. I'm like, "It's Rose." and they go "But what's it short for? Rosie? Rosemarie? Rosalind?" It's not short for anything you dumb

s! It's Rose! There were a bunch of people in sixth grade who called me all manner of "Rose+something" names. I don't mind so much when it's an affectionate nickname, but they were just doing it to annoy me.

wow, the Liberty Bell story is a killer!

Not heard any *extreme* names myself - my cousin's name is Jane and she married a guy with the last name Payne.
Yeah.
Fortunately she's kept her maiden name so it's Jane Sherwood-Payne.
Still, could have been disastrous

But often I've shocked my friends with suggestions I've made for my own children's names.

Favourites being "Phleghm" if its a boy and "Clitoris" if its a girl

(I think they're praying I don't ever have kids)

my name is actually Rosaria. I shortened it to Rose so that people would stop mispronouncing it: Rosina, Rosetta, Rosemary, Rosanna, Rosalia, Rosarina...Aaagh!! what's so hard about Rose+aria? another reason I changed to Rose, is that the Azaria Chamberlain murder case was a hot topic when I was 13, and people kept calling me Azaria, and making stupid dingo jokes. people still don't get my name right, and call me rosa, rosie or Roz. Also my Dad calls me Ross because he can't pronounce Rose.Some family members and old friends call me Sara, as that is what my name would be shortened to back in the old country(Sicily). I never answer to Rosa but tolerate the others. My niece is Estella Rose, but we just call her Boo or Peanut.
