Let's see, as of right now Kennedy and Reagan are popular names for girls, and I've seen a few Kaylees (including one spelling it Caylei). I've worked with a kid at art camp named Buck, graduated with a Holden McGuiness (Holden= Hold'em lmao). Seen every frackin' spelling for Ashley under the sun, including my own, because my parents loved the name but decided to be unique with the spelling.

Needless to say, no one can spell my name right and I like to go by Ash.

My sixth grade teacher swore that she had a friend that named her daughter Sierra Nevada. I have a friend back in Va. whose last name is Walker. He maintains that his oldest son will be named Luke Sky Walker. But then he's a spiteful Irish guy that claims that he wants his kids to grow up able to cope with life's hardships. I still think he's a prick if he goes through with it.

I am one of those kids with at weird spelling: Meghann. My mother was in labor reading the freaking Thornbirds so I am named after Meggie. I have never met anyone else with that spelling, close but never the same.

My name's spelling at least has story behind it and everyone always gushes over Richard Chamberland.

I don't know what kind of crack people are one when they are naming their kids. I have added Kaylee to my girls names list, but I could never torture my kids with Coco or Apple or even Kal-el (yes, I am a Supmerman fan).

What ever you do: please have a story and make sure that they will not get beat up on the playground, PLEASE!!!!!

I always hated "country" names for kids, ie: Cody, Austin, Dakota, ect. Don't know, they just rub me the wrong way.

Slightly off topic, but still falls in the realm of discussion. My niece is named Cate, and my Grandmother always calls her Catie. That really pisses me off every time. NO! Her name is C.A.T.E.!!!!

the kids I felt sorry for were the ones that had names their parents had entirely made up...these kids were never too sure of themselves, and I believe its because their name had no historical link or backstory ( like: we gave you an original name to encourage a unique personality etc.). it was as if they were floating around disconnected from the rest of the world...so please people if you are going to invent a name make sure you give it some significance by creating a reason or story to go with it.

Isn't Catie a pretty regular nickname for Cate? (Similar as with Kate/Katie?) And don't grandparents often use nicknames? Does this bother your niece or just you?

Yes. Hill fort of the High Kings. I mentioned it! Actually went to visit it with Tara and her Mum and Dad. They have a home video of me holding Tara while her Dad says "Tara, this is your hill! This is your hill!" while she stares at him in utter incomprehension. It's pretty funny.

It is indeed. The Buddhist patroness of kindness, wealth, wishes and (my personal favourite) female empowerment!

Tara is actually the Sanskrit word for "Star", which I think adds to it's appeal.

Any time you name a child you have to consider any and all potential nicknames arising from that name and decide if you can live with them. Because you'll have to. I'm very rarely Linda. I'm Lin, Linnie, Linna, Loo and even occasionally Lindie Loops. If there's any kind of affectionate way of twisting a name, even if it's longer than the original name you may be guaranteed that someone will call the kid that and stick with it.
Geekmafia's real name is Stewart. I call him Stu. Mum lectured me every time I called him that for years and I still won out of sheer persistance. Maybe also because I went through a phase of calling him Stupot just to annoy her. But to me he's Stu and always will be. Just like my Mum is Carly to her Mum. Just like Cate is your Grandmother's darling little Catie.
