it was getting kind of warm in the office yesterday. i went to turn on the fan and said 'i need air flow'. i instantly thought of wash when saffron was making him nervous. it made me smile.

I was saving a wallpaper for my computer at work. It's a picture of Faramir knee-deep in the river, with Boromir's funeral boat drifting past.
I saved it under the name "River(not her)" because I realized that at some point I'd look at the title and go, "I put that River-with-a-gun picture on my work computer?"

I work in retail and the other day I was helping a tall nicely built black woman with long dark curly hair. I didn't think much of it until her boyfriend/husband person came over to her. He was just slightly shorter than her, white man with blonde kinda messy hair. All I could do was grin incessantly at them while I rang up their sale.

I just thought of another one. I got an email from a friend of mine just a day or two ago. She was asking us about planning a bridal shower for another friend of ours and she used the word shindig!!!

From The Writer's Almanac on MPR for April 9, 2004. It brought Mal's face strongly to mind for me today - you'll know which expression I saw and when it appeared in my mind's eye when you read it.

It was on this day in 1865 that General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. In the year leading up to the surrender, the Northern blockade of the South had made it almost impossible for the Confederate army to get proper supplies. Confederate soldiers were fighting without decent food, without proper clothing, in some cases without even shoes. Confederate numbers were also dwindling as many soldiers began to desert.
By 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman had already marched through Georgia, destroying almost everything in his path, and had begun to march through the Carolinas. The Union Army had been laying siege to Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy. At the beginning of April in 1865, Grant launched an offensive that finally captured the city. President Abraham Lincoln traveled to Richmond on April 3rd to see the stars and strips flying above the Richmond capital building. Lincoln said, "Thank God I have lived to see this. It seems to me that I have been dreaming a horrid nightmare for four years, and now the nightmare is over."
Lee's army of about 25,000 fled to the west, without rations, surviving on dried corn that was meant to feed horses. They were followed by Grant's army of more than 100,000. On April 5, Grant sent a message to Lee that said, "General: The result of the last week must convince you of the hopelessness of further resistance on the part of the Army of Northern Virginia in this struggle." Lee wrote back to say, "Though not entirely of the opinion you express of the hopelessness of further resistance on the part of the army of Northern Virginia, I reciprocate your desire to avoid useless effusion of blood, and therefore, before considering your proposition, ask the terms you will offer, on condition of its surrender."
Lee and Grant met at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, Palm Sunday, just after noon. Lee was wearing his best gray Confederate uniform, with a sword at his side, while Grant showed up in a private's shirt, splashed with mud. The two men talked briefly, remembering that they had met during the Mexican War, and then discussed the terms of surrender. After it was over, Grant said, [I felt] sad and depressed at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, the worst for which people ever fought." When the Union soldiers began to cheer and celebrate, Grant ordered them to stop.
Lee rode back to his camp, and crowds of Confederate soldiers along the road began to weep as he passed. One man called out, "I love you just as well as ever, General." When he reached his tent, Lee said to the crowd, "Boys, I have done the best I could for you. Go home now, and if you make as good citizens as you have soldiers, you will do well, and I shall always be proud of you. Goodbye, and God bless you all."

On SNL last night/today they did a skit where Italian Wine makers talk about soaking the cork (I think you know what they were really talking about nudge nudge wink wink) well Janet Jackson asks Jimmy Fallon if his wife soaks cork, he replies:
"All the time when we were dating now not so much"
I almost died laughing. I promptly ran to my computer and typed this!

A few months ago, I was having a bad day at work when I was asked to do some DTP work on a flier for a local health and meditation class. I looked at the file and saw the name of the class was "Serenity", which immediately had me grinning stupidly at the screen for about five minutes, back in a good mood!
Last week, when watching "Wonderfalls", I totally lost concentration on the episode for a moment after the word "shindig" was used.
It seems like "Firefly" is everywhere!
