I dunno, in the end firefly/serenity is more about River than anything. Killing off Wash was a way of opening up the pilot spot of the ship to the kid.. sure at the end Mal is at the helm, but River has "some aptitude" with the controls..
think about it a sec... She can kill more reavers with a blade than Jayne, Zoey, Kaylee and the doc could hunkered down with automatic weapons, she can brush her fingers over a key panel and bring up long gone worlds, she can beat up Jayne (sorta, i still won't cave to that)in the middle of taking out a bar full of thugs, she's psychic... i mean, is there anything she CAN'T do amazingly? well, she hasn't flown anything yet (gasp) let's kill of wash and put her in the cockpit.
Joss has a way of writing and that's toward the females... he has said that he shows the females strengths and shows the men's faults, and if you watch the show/movie with that in mind it totally comes through.. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it at all, i'm just saying that's how he does it... If he was going to kill someone from the crew, it wouldn't be one of the females, It couldn't be Mal or Jayne because they're obviously fan favorites, and the Doc would be too much considering that he was more of a main character than Wash was in the show and the movie...
"I'm just the pilot".. Wash's character really doesn't go much farther than that. at one point he mentioned he was from a world that was polluted and another time he said he was once "laconic" in flight school... aside from being married to Zoey that's about all there was for him, aside from wisecracks (which were awesome!). I think Alan Tudyk did just as much as Joss did for the character in bringing it out...

Creatively, Joss made the movie he wanted to make, and he took the story to the point it would have been by Season 3. Serenity is a beautifully crafted and performed film... but it is not the movie that was going to give us the best chance of launching the "franchise". Again, this is from the point of guerilla marketer's point of view, but also as a fan who, like us all, went through so much grief over the loss of Firefly. I'd had my fill of grief and loss. We had our crew and ship back. Spiritually, I wanted to see everyone make it, we were reclaiming our 'Verse. There are so many more stories to tell, and we didn't get the time we should have with our crew... all of them.
Oh well. The Good Fight continues...
I agree entirely! I felt terrible after the movie because it seemed as though everything that could have been... was just stamped out... like Wash's life... :'(

I think Joss has been fairly clear that the death of Wash was to provide that "OMG - they're all going to die" feeling in the viewers. And it worked....
I find it really sad that everyone talks about the death of Wash, and just seems to skim over the death of Book. Was he not as major a character?
Personally, I think Wash will live on through his child, because we all know Zoe is pregnant..... ;)

Wash was one of those characters who was already great, but who had the potential to be taken into interesting directions. His upbeat, laid back, wise cracking style could have been tempered by the dangerous existence of life in the Black. He might have been taken into some interesting dark areas, and gone through changes, as the character of Wesley did.
I loved the chemistry between Mal and Wash, and how each had a powerful, but different, relationship with Zoe. It made for wonderful exchanges, and also gave Zoe some interesting character studies. On a side note, we know that Nathan and Alan are friends who enjoy hanging out with each other in real life, so that added a wonderful extra dimension. It's exceptionally rare for such an amazing combination to occur, it was well worth continuing and exploring further. I hated like hell to see Wash killed just so the Reaver battle would be scarier. What a waste.
As for Book, I hate like hell he was killed too. Talk about untapped potential! Book had a rich back story and it would have been fascinating to see him put into situations where his past caught up with him and all kinds of surprises appeared. But nooooo... Book was killed to explain why Mal would be angry enough to dress Serenity up as a Reaver ship and fly to Miranda. Well, that was rather a contrived way to burn up a great character.
Many fans had trouble recommending the movie because of the grief and disappointment they felt over the deaths of these beloved characters. Many also lost hope for continuing the 'Verse because of those deaths. It's a shame, because we needed everyone to get behind the movie full strength to give it the best chance possible for success.. One wonders if it was worth killing them for the purposes of shock value.
Just my opinion.

First time I saw the movie was on DVD at home.
I had no idea what Firefly was.
How I wish I could go back and watch the series first. I was in love instantly but I didnt have that deep hurting feeling that many of you had. Obviously watching Serenity after the series again was a better experience but the shock value was gone.
As far as Wash goes... I've said this before, if firefly/Serenity returned the opening scene would be Wash waking up in an Alliance/Blue Sun interrogation room.
I do agree that Joss should not have killed anyone, especially not one of the most lovable characters that would have people coming back to the franchise..but this is Joss Whedon, he's going to kill someone and I was just happy it wasnt Mal.

I too saw it on DVD at home. I had only seen the first 2 television episodes and for what ever reason it did not strike a chord with me. So we turned on the surround sound system and pressed play...we watched and had the same reactions that any browncoat worth there salt would. When it was over we knew that this was something special.
Several months went by and my dad saw Firefly season one at Barns & Nobels for $20.00 USD ! He brought it home and by the end of the first disc we were hooked. We were sooo tired by the time disc four was finished and we had the sudden realization that was it...no more episodes and we were actually heart-sick at the very idea.
