Johnny Depp will certainly increase the fan base, especially when it comes to female fans. I believe Dark Shadows got slimed by male critics at the time because it had "Soap Opera" aspects (complex, multi-threaded plots). But most scripted shows now go in that direction. Do it with contemporary dialog, and it will work. Imagine if Joss were writing the script! Heh, heh....

What is it with women and vampires?

Hi all,

I am brand new to your group but not that new to Firefly or Joss Whedon. I am a huge fan of Dark Shadows, the 1966-71 series, and have been voting for DS for months. Well ever since we learned about TV-Vote website. Ever since Ray came to our Sci-Fi board and posted the stats for DS, I have been voting for Firefly too! Why not? I like the short lived series... who said the networks or the Nielson ratings knew anything? IMO they know very little of what the fans like!

Anyway, if anyone here has seen Dark Shadows, the original with Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, and liked it back when they were children, please remember us at the TV-Vote Nominations page. Once on the top 40s list, we'll have great competition, I know because there are shows on that list that I love too: Angel, BTVS, CSI, Firefly, House, Xena to name a few.

So if you have any questions about Dark Shadows and why you might vote for us, just ask me.

I wonder if they get help from the Buffy/Angel fans? Is Dark Shadows in syndication, or is it all because of a DVD release? Some of those old shows can pick up a lot of new fans via decades of syndication, plus DVD release.

I thought I'd try to answer this. It is amazing that this 41 year old show is still alive in the hearts of it's fans! Dark Shadows was on the Sci-Fi Channel from the mid-90's to 2003 when it finally stopped showing it in Dec. 2003. I didn't find out about it until 2002 in which I was shocked the Sci-Fi Channel had been running the entire series through several times. That is 5 years of 1225 episodes run repeated, I believe, 2 or 3 times in that span. There are countless websites that are dedicated to fans like this one for the Firefly fans. Oh yes, the DVDs, all 26 boxes, are available starting with the arrival of Barnabas Collins to the end of the series. MPI is now making the first 209 episodes available on DVD to the public. The first 26 boxes are available through various websites that sell DVDs or can be rented through Blockbusters or Netflix.

Thanks for your question. Hope that helps.

I'm going to answer your question first or ask you a question as the answer: "Have you have been nibbled on the neck? Ok, ok, maybe men don't care for that sort of thing and some vampires desire the stake "rare"! But I have to say Barnabas Collins, Angel and Spike are my favorite vamps.

As far as I know, back when Dark Shadows originally ran, 1966-1971, the fan base were house wives and later millions of pre-teens and teenages, both boys and girls!!! Many of those "boys" are now men who frequent the DS boards and lists. I have to admit, I've met more women than men but they are out there!

Oh and I hear Joss Whedon WAS/is a big fan of DS back when he was a teen too, along with James Marsters and Johnny Depp!! I hear Depp has publicly admitted he's always wanted to play Barnabas Collins so he is a great choice. All the DS fans I've talked with a thrilled with the idea. As far as I'm concerned, I'd love to see Joss Whedon be a writer for that movie!! Tell Depp!!! My one request would be to write something original and NOT the same repeated story that they've done in 1991 and again in 2004 [which was never broadcast].
