Quote:Obviously I'm not sold on the idea of permanent bases either. So basically your goal for Iraq is stability. What about democracy? What about unity? Part of the package, or not?
There were WMD in Iraq, just not what we expected. Give the surge a chance.Leaving Iraq before the Gov't has a chance to stand on its own would lead to a true civil war, with 100,000's of more lives being lost and destablilizing a large portion of the middle east w/ no military presence to put out the fire. Now I'll admit that I am baffled at this nameless, all powerful person/persons behind the concept that we MUST establish a full time base there. I'm not sure I'm sold on that idea.
Quote:Well, I would prolly pick apart some of your examples. Grocery stores and home improvement stores and many clothing stores offer goods cheaply and efficiently. But car insurance, gas stations, and the software and entertainment industries? I think their prices are way way inflated.
I don't want Gov't health care because I prefer the free market. It seems to work just fine with grocery stores, pizza delivery, car insurance, gas stations, home suupply, etc... We don't have Gov't running any of those outfits, do we? And yet the goods / services get deliverd just fine. Why should healthcare be any different?
And health care isn't available like grocery stores, where the free market seems to work well. Maybe it's because when you NEED health care you're not about to shop around, or maybe it's because the health care industry has a gazillion lobbyists everywhere and grocery stores don't, or maybe it's because health care is just too expensive for the average person under ANY circumstances, but for some reason health care really seems to follow a different model than grocery stores or even the entertainment industry. It's NEVER seemed to follow the grocery store model and I'm not sure if it can be induced to head in that direction. or even what it would take to get it moving that way.

It's stupid to compare healthcare with a grocery store. One sells goods and the other services and you can't equate the two business models. Market economics works best when it comes to sale of goods because you are selling identical items that can be manufactured/distributed/sold in bulk. If product X has a big following and makes money then competitors will be encouraged to make their own product X and over time the costs will fall. It is that competition that drives the market and ensures lower prices.
Unfortunately healthcare is a service which means it essentially a one and one arrangement between service supplier and service provider. There is no economy of scale because it's a tailored service that is is based on expensive labour. It is hard to imagine how a pure market could address that (unless we did something radical like train doctors for free on the understanding that for the next X years a percentage of their billable time would be pro-bono.)

CAR INSURANCE ?
FREE MARKET ?!!!
BWahahahahahahahaha!
What are you, nuts ?
Try Government-mandated and sponsored monopoly, as it is required by law, and given the history of them not living up to their end of the contract, changing it without end user approval or even notice, or just plain out and out ripoffs, if it wasn't required by law, most folk would dump the bastards - all that money and the first thing they do with it is hire lawyers to use against you, the so-called customer(victim).
Once again, busting on folks who say "Free Market" but wither and crumble when the BS is stripped off - and grocery stores ? un huh, when big boxers move in and buy off the local govs zoning board and then use every conceivable bit of shystering to create an artificial monopoly, hiding behind the Gov to protect them from effective competitor or community retaliation.
Sponsored and protected monopolies are not Free Market, that's just more doublespeak.
I'm all for training doctors for free however, that'd be a start given it would remove a lot of the pressure on docs to cut corners to make a buck cause they're laboring under some pretty extreme expenses starting out - for the cost of an aircraft carrier or attack sub we already got plenty of, I'm sure you could train quite a few doctors... if they're gonna rob my payroll, at least put the ill gotten gains to a decent use, yeah.

This thread is from the month I first saw Firefly, and likely the month I first visited here.
My introduction to the characters here. And so accurate, practically nobody has changed in how delusional or realistic they were. Sigs and rue/kiki seem to have not learned anything in the intervening years.
Refreshing to see how RapKnight and Jongsy were always right on target.
And even better yet, this helps expose how delusional the Libtards were, just as the Rock-The-Vote Libtards swept in during Jan 2007 were about to accomplish their greatest feat - the Rock-The-Vote Recession, which they started in the very first month of their very first Fiscal Year Budget disaster, October 2007. These Libtards all rushing headlong into the worst Recession in the nation's history.
