From which "Lux Aeterna" on the soundtrack has been used on practically every (or at least it seems like every) movie trailer ever since...

I love Mirrormask. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers today. If you want some kind of wierd but wonderful fantasy in written form give some of his books a try. Good Omens with Terry Prachett about the somewhat botched biblical apocolypse or Neverwhere (which I've heard started life as a BBC production, must see if I can dig that up anywhere) about the place where you will find the people who slip through the cracks in the world.

What a GREAT thread!! So many of these movies are making me go "Oh yeah! Man was that some weird shit!"

But speaking of weird shit, I cannot believe nobody has mentioned Jodorowsky's "El Topo" and/or "The Holy Mountain" yet!

Way back in the day, my first boyfriend used to drag me to see these movies, over and over, and if you paid me money I couldn't tell you what the f*** was going on in either of them.

Japanese movies may be alien, but if the criteria is to think "What the hell did I just see....?" then "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke" qualify--in a good way.

I thought "Memento" was completely bizarre when I saw it. What a great movie.

"The Magic Christian" was...well, yeah.

"Arsenic and Old Lace"--c'mon! Maybe traditional structure, but old ladies poisoning old gentlemen and burying them in the basement? The uncle who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt? That's not weird?

Some of the others people have mentioned:

"Dead Ringers" -- Oh MAN! If you are not female and have seen the movie....well, be glad. If you are female and have not seen the movie...think twice, then think again.

"A Boy and His Dog"...YES! YES! That has got to be one of the greates sci fi movies EVER! "And quit calling me Albert!"

Ok, how about some classic mainstream wierd.
The Heathers
Some outsider high school kids knock off the popular students and it make it look like suicide. Suicide is then considered a cool fad. It may have a plot and a story but it's still wierd.

And I'm going to put down Smokin' Aces just because I can't figure out if I liked it or thought it was a total piece of crap. And I'm usually quite opinionated about movies.

And Erg, I LOVE Arsenic and Old Lace. It's one of my favorite movies.

Arsenic and Old Lace is a great play. Makes a great high school drama production if your students have the stamina (it's long and demanding). 'Course I loved the Cary Grant cinematic version...
