Because there are help desks. George Smiley (the protagonist of a number of John Le Carre novels) was for a while at the Northern Europe Desk at the Circus (fictional equivalent of MI-6) this was a bit of a bad clue as I remembered the posting as being the Overseas Desk - my bad. And of course a desk is a bit of furniture that one frequently bangs ones head against at work - figuratively one hopes.
