Yeah, why get the government involved for a 5% adminsitrative cost when we can funnel money through "for profit" insurances, and not only have them screw OVER their customers but pay 30% "adminstrative" costs on top of that? Sounds lke a f*ckin good deal to me!

The "children" aren't some endangered species. Where in the hell does the Constitution state that 'We the People' must pay for health care for other people's kids ? It's certainly not a FEDERAL power to do so. I fully support Bush's choice, though I'm confused as to why "Mr. Open Borders" would take a stance on THIS issue to stop expanding the size of Government. States and private organizations are more than welcome to help out, but not the Fed Gov't.

Not overly fond of how this issue is being spun, but that's to be expected. *sigh*

Meanwhile, out here in California, the state budget, due JUly 1, hasn't passed because the Republicans are trying to *Q*U*I*E*T*L*Y* cut $400 million out of the education budget.

So we don't have to educate your poor kids either...

We're rapidly advancing to third-world status. I know my persistent anti-corporatism prolly bugs a lot of Libertarians, but you know what? Business has had it's shot for decades, especially in health care. With four times as many lobbysists as Congressmen, they've had all the opportunity to create an efficient shining model of free enterprise, and all they've done is prove that venality, corruption, ineffectiveness and greed doesn't work.

So f*ck 'em.

I think it’s a safe bet that a lot of people here don’t want a big, wasteful, free-for-all government that takes our tax dollars and blows it on every little entitlement that comes down the pike, but for crying out loud, if this country can’t help those among us who, through no fault of their own, need assistance, then what kind of nation have we become.

Just listen to politicians when they want to be elected to office. They go on and on about the future of this country and how they will, if elected, bring a better world to our children. Yet, when it comes down to a choice between money for more bombs and child welfare, you can bet the bombs will win.

You might say that there is nothing in the Constitution about taking care of someone else’s kids, and you don’t feel obligated, but I think morality goes a little farther than that. If I had a choice of where my tax dollars went, I would pick the welfare of my fellow humans not the destruction of life.

And one more thing, did anyone actually hear Bush say the word “philosophical”? I’ll bet he butchered it.

Thanks Deadlock, you prettymuch summed it up - pisses me off enough gettin reamed by the taxman as it is, but at the very least they could put it to better uses than the racket that is the imperial war machine.

Oh, and if you think YOU get reamed, have a look at just how badly an independant, self-employed cabbie driving on contract does....

I prolly make the least money of any employed person here, and yet take the largest tax hit too, so one can imagine my lack of sympathy for tax-sheltered corporations.

Where in the hell does the Constitution say the US is a money economy ? Where does it say things should be bought and sold ? Where does it say people should work for others ?

I mean, really, I'd have a lot better case for supporting poor kids (promote the general welfare - HEY ! it says the Feds can run welfare !!! ) than I would for anything else.

So, yeah that was silly, it's how I joke. But the Federal government was formed to promote the general welfare, so i's obvously a function of government. The US as a bastion of capitalism ... ... not so much.

I didn't overlook anything as I was responding to the thread. If you want to bring up OTHER issues, by all means, have at it. On this issue there's no hypocrisy at all, so your point is moot. Try again.

And by the way, not that you asked, but I do favor changing the income tax system. Preferably to the FAIR tax, but again, that's for another thread.
