Buffy: the events that stay powerful, and the ones who's impact has faded...

The only thing that strikes me as losing it's impact is Oz leaving. I'm still not thrilled about the way he was written out in "Wild At Heart" (felt his actions in that ep. were completely out of character for him and Seth's exit should've been handled differently), but it doesn't bring me to tears anymore. Jenny's death never did, although I did feel bad for Giles and Willow.

The stuff that still retains it's impact are the basics...

Meeting the original Scooby gang for the first time, especially Xander and Willow; Buffy's cool reaction "Oh look, a bad guy" line in "Prophesy Girl" after being drowned by the Master and the theme playing in the background; Xander's "If Willow dies I'll kill you" speech to Buffy in "When She Was Bad"; Oz seeing Willow for the first time; Xander and Cordy's kiss; Oz's "In my fantasy, when I'm kissing you, you're kissing me" speech; Buffy and Angel having sex for the first time and it's consequences; Buffy preventing Giles from getting killed by Angelus; Buffy killing Angel; Angel's return; the shock of finding out that Cordy really loved Xander; Faith's downfall, Buffy trying to get through, Angel almost succeeding where she failed; "Earshot"; Xander's speech to Buffy in "The Freshman"; "Hush"; Faith's return; Buffy telling Giles she needs him before he can tell her he's leaving because she doesn't; Xander's speeches to Buffy and Anya in "Into the Woods"; Riley leaving and thinking Buffy let him go; "The Body"; the final scene in "Forever"; Tara's brainsuck by Glory for protecting Dawn; Buffy's "any of you goes near Dawn, I'll kill you" speech; Buffy's sacrifice and Spike & Giles reactions especially in "The Gift"; The gang surprising Giles at the airport; Spike's protection of Dawn; the heartbreak of knowing what Buffy experienced while dead and was forced out of by those who loved her; "OMWF"; Giles leaving; Willow & Tara's breakup; Anya's heartbreak; Dawn's reaction to Tara and Willow's make-up; Tara's death and especially Dawn's reaction; Andrew saying he could summon a demon to kill Willow and Xander saying "And I could smack you so hard your eyeballs'll switch sockets"; Giles returning with the intent of sacrificing himself to save Willow; Buffy telling Giles the events of the year and the laughter that followed; Dawn helping Buffy fight for the first time; Xander saving scary-veiny, crayon-breaky Willow and the world; Willow's "I just wanna be Willow" line; Buffy sharing her strength with a wounded Willow; the song in "Conversations with Dead People"; the First using Tara's memory against Willow; Xander's speech to Dawn in "Potential"; Xander being wounded by Caleb; Buffy being kicked out of her house by Dawn; Buffy calling Xander her strength and getting him to take Dawn out of town; Dawn getting the upper hand and going back to help fight; Dawn refusing to say goodbye to Buffy; Dawn kicking Buffy and saying "Dumbass"; the original Scooby gang meeting in the school hallway; Buffy's "are you ready to be strong?" speech; Anya's death; the spell and it's impact on young girls; Spike's sacrifice; that most survived for new adventures; Buffy's smile.

Feel free to tell me if I left anything out!

Buffy's speech to Angel in "Amends", which pretty much became the Angel mission statement.

You got me!

Guess what else I thought of?

The scene in the library from "Dopplegangland" when Buffy, Xander & Giles think Willow is dead. You still totally empathize even though you know perfectly well that she's fine. Somebody says (I think Buffy) that she was the best of all of them. Xander says she was way better than him. Giles agrees. Then she walks in and they think she's a vamp. Xander waves the cross in front of her, to no effect. They all hug her, overexcitedly. Completely weirded out, she asks if they all took a bunch of drugs. Buffy asks Giles to explain, which he can't. Xander says "Can you believe the Watcher's Council let this guy go?"

"Hush" (probably the creepiest episode of the show ever) was about a group of demons called The Gentlemen that could not speak, could only smile and show their metal teeth. They stole the voices of everyone in town (through magic) so they could float around and steal their hearts without a problem. They had these weird demony straight-jacketed things that went around and attacked people for them. It was never explained, I don't think, why they needed the hearts, but in the end it was Buffy's screaming (a magical box that contained the voices had been opened) that killed them, exploding their heads.

The overall theme of the episode was about communication. The gang had to find creative ways to communicate so they could figure out what was going on and stop it. Scary, funny, and fun. Great episode. Scared the crap out of me--and I was 21.

One moment from season 7 that no one really mentioned that I always liked was in "Conversations with Dead People" when Johnathan finally remembers his locker combination, which leads to this bit about how he thinks about the people he went to high school with and wonders what happened to them. Andrew dismisses this saying that high school was a horrible time and that no one cares about him. And then Johnathan replies, "Yeah, but I still care about them." and then continues to dig up the seal. You really get a sense that he's gotten past all that high school bullshit and that he's doing something good for his former classmates, even if he was never once accepted.

Two weekends ago, I attended a wedding. And to my surprise, there was a guy from my first school there at the wedding. This guy was in the grade that was two years ahead of us. And the guys in that grade were the worst guys you could imagine. It's as if all the bullies in one school was grouped in to one class. To be fair, this guy wasn't the worst amongst them. Maybe he was, but her never bothered me personally. Anyways, I go up to him after the service and at the reception, and we end up having a nice chat and was pleasant and all. I brought up high school and he admitted that he was an asshole then and that he got better. The point is, with high school past us, we were able to get past all that clique bullshit and just have a good time. I even made him bust a gut laughing.

I bring this up, because that real life incident reminded me of Johnathan's last good deed. In the quagmire that was season 7, this was one of my few favorite moments in the season, because it touches on something that happens to all of us in a subtle way. When we're living through it, high school is a tumultuous and torturous time. But after we've gotten past it and we've moved on with our lives, we do eventually look back on it and gain perspective and acceptance about our high school years. And we no longer look back wishing death to our enemies, but we have a genuine curiosity of "whatever happened to that guy or girl".

I think that great for a show that metaphorically was about growing up and that transition from being a teenager to being an adult, that it did touch on that psychological byproduct of the high school experience. That what was once horrendous and terrible now seems spiritually cleansing.

I wish Johnathan was the one left standing and was helping the Scoobies in Season 8. Andrew is just an annoying little bitch that deserves to be slaughtered.

I loved Andrew! Of course I also loved it when Xander threatened to smack him so hard his eyeballs would have switched sockets when Andrew offered to summon a demon to kill Willow.

But I loved Andrew...and Jonathan.
