I was just wondering about The Slayer....

In a way this is a mute point given that there are many Slayers now, but I was thinking what would have happened had a Slayer fallen into a coma indefinitely. As Faith did, but without the world having a second Slayer?... Would vampires and demons and evil have been free to roam the earth? Would it not therefore have been more shrewd of the Vampire race to put a Slayer into a Coma, rather than kill her and cause rise to another 'new' Slayer?...

That is a good point. There was no new Slayer called during Faith's stint as coma-girl. But then again, I've never credited the demonic community with an overabundance of brains (well, except maybe Lorne).

The Watcher Council would probably arrange for an accident so that a new Slayer would arise.

Nothing paranoid about it! They would do it for sure.

As for the two watchers we know...Wesley would do it for sure. He's shown numerous times he values the greater good over single lives/happiness. Willow in 'Choices', the freedom fighters on Pylea, Faith in 'Orpheus'. Would Giles do it? Not concerning Buffy of course, but as an assignment handed to him by the Council. I think it's an interesting question - think of his reactions to Dawn and Ben in 'The Gift', or even Spike in 'Lies My Parents Told Me' (although thats a slighter thornier issue - his graveyard speech to Buffy is relevant to it).

Yes I totally agree. I was meaning paranoia from the scoobies. As in the show sets it all up to suggest the gang are getting paranoid. I like it, i think that would have been a great device to put Buffy & Co through. In fact now I think of it, there could have been an entire season to suggest the Council are the BIG BAD....

In my mind, the Watcher Council believed that the actions that they took benefited the greater good. However, they were also very "practical" and could be ruthless. We saw them a couple of times in action, and they aways came off (to me) as pompous holier-than-thou twits.

It depends on the Slayer. I think that Wesley has learned over the years that some tough decisions like that one are not worth making. So if the Slayer in question were Faith, I think that now he wouldn't be able to do it. As for Giles, the same applies. If it were Buffy, he wouldn't be able to go through with it.

He was ready to sacrifice Faith in 'Release' by shooting her up with orpheus and feeding her to Angelus. This was the last real contact Wes had with Faith, barring a nod and "Faith" at the end of 'Orpheus', and so I see no reason why Wesley would have had a major shift in his thinking concerning Faith.
And if he didn't even know the slayer in question, he wouldn't hesitate. I guess you're referring to his decision to steal Conner when you say "decisions like that one are not worth making" - his decision there was based on his belief he was saving people (namely Conner and Angel) he knew by causing them hurt in the shortish term. To kill a girl in a coma who was a stranger to him to allow a new slayer to arise who would save hundreds of lives - to Wesley that wouldn't be a choice at all.
