Yeah, Startroop, that's why I added considering the timeline. With that goes budget and such. As for Mad Max, budget and Mel Gibson (one of my favorite actors) aside, I just couldn't get into it. Perhaps the Aussie dialect would have helped, but I don't know...

I will certainly defend THX-1138 on this list. It was George Lucas's first real movie and given the nothing budget he had to work with, he ended up making a pretty profound statement.

Mad Max, if you can get the version that isn't dubbed, (they didn't think an Austrailian accent would sell for some reason), is probably the top post holocaust film again given there that was no budget and the star at that time was a complete unknown.

For 9. how about Galaxy Quest? It's funny and good SF at the same time. Very hard to do.

What about Blade Runner? And I do think Alien Rocked. I don't know much about the earlier movies though. Anything pre-1975 I probably haven't seen.

As to Mad Max. Decent film but a little slow and hard to get into even with the Aussie voices. I'm not saying it's the best film of the batch but of the three my favorite is Road Warrior.

And while I love Galaxy Quest, I'm not sure I wou7ld put it in the top ten. Maybe top twenty.

I just threw that up as a strawman to get this going. I agree that Alien should be on the list. It is one of the scariest "Creature Features" made. It was made in homage to "The Thing" from the 50's. also should probably be on the list.

Blade Runner should be on the list as well. The story that Phillip K. Dick wrote was thought provoking. The movie, while very different was also thought provoking.

Along those lines, how about adding "Soylent Green" and "Silent Running" to the list?

Personally, I would strike stuff like GALAXY QUEST, MEN IN BLACK and GHOSTBUSTERS off the list, because to me they aren't science fiction. They're high concept FX comedies. Very well done ones, considering that those type of movies are surprisingly tricky to do, but to be considered on the same level as say 2001, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and all the other ones is sort of comparing apples to carrots.

Also, ETERNAL SUNSHINE is more of a high concept fantasy than real science fiction.

It's good to keep in mind that this is the 100 BEST REVIEWED sci-fi movies and not like an AFI List.

And one film that's off the list that should be on there is my favorite Canadian film, LAST NIGHT. Film about the last six hours of humanity before the world ends at midnight. Is without a doubt the most beautiful film about the end of the world ever made. And if not that, then at least the first CUBE. There's a mindfucker if there ever was one.

I agree, I think MIB, Galaxy Quest, Ghost Busters, etc... are in a separate class. Maybe the right debate to have here is "What is a Sci Fi movie?"

Do "Creature Features" count? IF so, what keeps Horror, which is its own category, disticnt?

What do you think?

I really don't see how you can't consider them sci fi, Young Frankenstein included. How is a movie dealing with a fictional science based theme not sci fi? Being a comedy or action film overall doesn't remove it from the sci fi category.
Just like it'd be ridiculous to say Somewhere in Time isn't a fantasy because there's no elves and it takes place in the 20th century.

And Fifth Element wasnt even on the list.
