Agreed. The first half of season two wasn't as consistent, but the second half was more than enough to make up for it. On the other hand, season three had great episodes throughout (though it's still not as jaw-dropping as season two, in my mind).

Well, for me, 5 had three absolutely stunning episodes (The Body, Fool for Love, the Gift), but the rest felt a little lacking. I dunno, maybe it it tread a little too far into the fantasy genre for me, with the knights trying to get Dawn and Glory's weird minions... and I wasn't too crazy about the actual character of Glory, either. I guess, for all the hype she got from being a god, she just didn't seem as impressive. Which makes sense story-wise, since even Buffy can't kill a full-fledged god, but it left me feeling wanting.

Otherwise, it was character stuff. I liked Buffy just fine, but I felt Xander got a little too wimpified. And I know Xander was never Mr. Strong Man, and he was my favorite character for that (that is, I could relate :p ), but I think they took that too far. Like in the episode where he splits into two halves? The "weak" half or whatever was basically regular Xander at that point. I don't think they really fixed that until the season 6 finale, which I absolutely adored.

However, I'm willing to forgive all that because of Giles in the wizard's hat.

That was a jem no doubt. I don't know if you've noticed but next to Joss, Drew Goddard is the next best comedy writer.... Well he and Jane Espenson are equal I guess. He frequently writes the funnier episodes, even now he writes for Lost, his stuff is always funny. And that's tough with Lost, it's not exactly trying for the humour so he does very well to have any in at all.
