The Dresden Files? SciFi Sundays before Battlestar Galactica. But the show is off for the summer I think. So September maybe the new season will begin.

I almost bought the first book, but as I flipped through it, some'n about the eye sockets in Bob's skull lighting up whenever Harry invokes him put me off a bit, and reminded me just how much I loved Terrance Mann's performance.

A friend of mine lent me a tape she had of some of the episodes, and I recently read the first book. I really enjoy the show, and the books are more than decent. I do like Bob better in the show, though. I like that he looks like a real person and is often out of his skull (heh) but the books, like books do, go into more details and background and such, which is nice.
I'm betting that Mister isn't in the show much (or at all, whichever way it actually is) because it's hard to characterize a cat on screen. In books it works better because motivation can be told and not shown. It's hard to show some things.
First season is coming out on DVD? Oooooh, shiny! Now I can see all the episodes!!

So far I've read through the first five books and I must say I'm incredibly impressed. There hasn't been a weak link yet. Each book moves along fluidly with very little down time. Don't want to get into a detailed analysis of each book because that would take forever so I'll just touch on a few high points.

I was amazed by the variety of werewolves in Fool Moon. I'm not an expert or anything but the explanations sound plausible. Butcher's depiction of the loup-garou variant is the most chilling I have come across in print or on screen.

Really like the idea of The Knights of the Cross. It's a great way to add a religious element without being too preachy. In fact the interplay between magic, religion, and the modern world in these books is seemless.

The idea of regular demons being different from fallen angels was one of the more interesting aspects of Death Masks. Those Fallen were just plain creepy and damn near unstoppable.

It was surprising to me how much Murphy distrusts Harry in the early novels. Then again the amount of trouble surrounding him would give anyone pause. Great to watch the progression of their relationship throughout the books. It was also surprising to me how much she actually knows about what is really going on. Harry pretty much laid it all out after one of their meltdowns. A very interesting contrast to the TV series.

Morgan just plain cannot abide Harry. I think if he could get away with it he would take Harry out. On the show there is a least a grudging respect between the two but in the novels they can't stand each other.

Is it just me or is Harry Dresden the Al Bundy of the magical community? I mean, occasionally things go right but for the most part life just keeps kicking him in the balls. The amount of shit that piles up around him wave after wave is just amazing.

Finally, I need to draw a parallel between this series and BTVS. No matter how bad things get Harry always has a smart assed comment for his allies and would be dispatchers. He has very little respect for those obviously superior to him(in power that is) and no respect for authority, most notably The White Council. Sounds a lot like a little slayer girl I used to watch on TV.

See, I almost hate knowing what's going to happen. Ah, the things that are in store for you.

Things get better and worse for Harry. I'll leave you to decide which is which. And the Al Bundy correlation is dead on; not only does he tend to get crapped on, he's perpetually broke as well.

Oh, and don't forget books eight and nine.

Just finished with books 6 and 7. There were a few surprises and some things I could see coming. I'll put the rest in a spoiler tag just in case.

I had a bad feeling when Harry decided to bury that coin in his basement. If he truly wanted to put it out of reach there were definitely better ways than keeping it in his home. The way Lasciel has been working him is subtle and brilliant. Huge surprise when it turned out Shiela was her illusory form. You could feel Harry deflate when he found out. I'm guessing he will be relying on her more in the coming novels.

The differences between the vampire courts is at least as interesting as Butcher's different depictions of werewolves. The idea that they have different abilities, weaknesses, and ways of feeding is quite creative. I knew something was up with Thomas but I wasn't expecting him to be Harry's long lost brother. With Harry's luck I had assumed he was being used by another backstabbing vampire.

The biggest surprise for me was Harry becomming a Warden. Never in a million years did I see that coming. It's the last thing I would expect the Council it ask of him and beyond the last thing I would expect him to accept. Given how dire the situation was I guess there wasn't much of a choice. Just listening to how the wizards had been decimated by the Red Court was stunning. That would be one hell of a thing to see.

These Old Ones that are spoken of remind me of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, I wonder if that's where Butcher is drawing from. If so it would be cool if he had permission to incorporate them fully into one of his stories.

What's up with Murphy and Kincaid? Guess she likes bad boys, well technically he's not a boy. I'm not entirely sure what happened on that trip but I've got a feeling it isn't everything we are being led to believe. Her absence felt kind of weird to me.

One more surprise I forgot about was finding out about "Blackstaff" McCoy. I definitely did not see that one coming. The idea that the White Council employs a black knight so to speak is quite interesting. Harry's reaction was predictable but he pressed his old mentor for the truth. No wonder Harry doesn't trust anybody, they are always hiding something that he can't reconcile.

It took 7 books but it looks like the war is finally over between Morgan and Harry. Until Morgan tries to order Harry around that is. So Harry is now regional commander of nobody, what a lofty position. At least he gets to consult with Ramirez and draw a regualr paycheck.

Holy crap that was a lot of typing! Books 8,9 are headed my way so until then...
