Does anyone pay attention to the Star Wars EU novels?

Plus it was, tone-wise, everything the Prequels should've been --dark, ominous, desperate, willing to punch readers in the gut and change things, and with the added bonus of an ending that we didn't all know was coming.

Plus, the Yuuzhan Vong are some of the greatest bad guys in Sci-fi.

I just didn't particular care for the way the characters were developed, particularly Luke or the Solo kids. Thanks again for that link, Steamer. I've been out of the Star Wars fandom for awhile, but with the 30th Anniversary, I've gotten very nostalgic for it again.

Along those lines I would be remiss in not mentioning my admiration for the Dark Lords of the Sith comics. While not as fleshed out as full on novels it is one of the darkest SW stories I have read. Another great thing is that the events take place thousands of years before the movies. No reliance on Luke, Leia, and the gang to carry the story. Kevin J. Anderson really hit a homer with this series and I can't recommend it highly enough.

I guess I'm just a fan of character deaths. It keeps things much more real. So, when a main character bought it in the first book that was a good sign to me. Especially cause it really hit hard. That one was very unexpected to me.

The development of the jedi was great IMO. It's what the focus of the EU should have been on from the start IMO. I mean the force is one of the main aspects of Star Wars. The orginal trilogy leaves us with one jedi and it's his job to relearn it all and then pass it on. So, we get to learn and explore the force right along with all the jedi. Then the conflict of the Vong really gets the ball rolling. You get to see the different philosophies and factions of the jedi and how they think and how none of them are 100% right. All in all I thought it was a great series.
