In need of some assistance here.

My brother is a professed Buffy-hater (I used to be one myself, once upon a less-enlightened time). He's in fact disowned me for buying the season eight comic. But I know if I could just get him to sit down and watch the show, he might, at the very least, learn to tolerate it. The funny thing is, he liked Serenity. So I know it's not a hatred of Joss I'm dealing with. In his mind, Buffy was a cheesy show. It doesn't help that one of the first episodes he saw was "Tabula Rasa" (the whole man-shark guy really lowered his opinion of things).

So I'm wondering here what would be the best way to start him off. I'm afraid if he starts off on the first season, he'll get turned off pretty quickly. He's the type of person that roots for the bad guys, so I don't see him getting overly attached to the Scoobies. Maybe if I start him on some of season two? I think he'd like Angelus.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Try to coax him with the first episode of Angel? He might like Doyle and it might just trigger enough questions to have him watch a few episodes of Buffy in order to figure out what the hell that episode was all about.

I was a reluctant convert to Buffy. Had my mind all made up to dislike it too. 'Course I'm in love with it now, just like the rest of the Whedonverse.

In fact I'm sitting here watching season 2 as we're typing.

Your own suggestion about starting with some of season two is a good one... Angelus is a great character and also Spike.. he's bound to like Spike and Drusilla if he likes the "bad guys".

Also Solan is right... getting him involved with Angel might make him think he wants to know what happened on Buffy to know more about Angel.

start him off on Firefly, and then work from there. once you have him hooked on Firefly then work on the other whedon shows.

I vote for showing him "Hush" first, too. He'd certainly have a lot of questions on who these people are and what went on previously, but he's gotta get intrigued by a TV show that takes risks like this episode did!

Or if he's hooked on FF, what about letting him see Nathan being an evil preacher? (Don't know the episode names, sorry!) Let him back track from there if he's interested.

My first episode was "Earshot", which, looking back, was a really fortunate break in terms of introducing me to (and getting me hooked on) the show, because it really packs all the elements that make the series great into a single episode, and even tho it's near the end of S3, it's pretty much a standalone ep that doesn't have a lot of references to the seasonal arc for a newbie viewer to be confused by.

But if your brother likes 'bad guys', I vote for "School Hard"... or do like someone else already suggested and try to get him into "Angel" first. Of the two, "Angel" is more of the 'guy show', with "Buffy" being more the 'chick show', so he might respond better to "Angel" to begin with...

Around the time of the BDM, when I was at the peak of my Firefly obsession, an old friend of mine who was going through a divorce and needed a place to stay started living on my couch. Within hours, he was a Firefly fan. No problem.
Now, this is a Thirty five year old twice divorced, exconvict, woman hating, Buffy ridiculing man.
But, I don't have cable. Local TV is crap. I do,however, have all seven seasons of Buffy on DVD. With too much idle time on his hands, and lots of anxiety, he started watching the DVDs (probably, just to make fun of them).
He held out as long as he could but he's a fan now.
First, he begrudgingly acknowledged that it was a well written show. Then, he became invested in various characters. Before it was over, he was completely emotionally involved in the Buffy story.
I've been responsible for the reluctant (Buffy hating) conversion of most of my friends and family. It's all about exposure. It might be four episodes. I might be ten. But, if you keep watching the show, you will be a fan.

IF HE LIKES THE BAD GUYS THEN YES I THINK U SHOULD START HIM OFF ON SEASON2,IF THAT DOESN'T WORK TRY TO START HIM OFF WHERE WILLOW GOES EVIL AND SEE IF THAT WORKS,I GUESS.

If I am ever trying to convert someone to Buffy, I use the season 2 ep 'Lie to Me'. Not only is it one of the best Buffy episodes overall, I think it contains all the elements that make Buffy great. It has a couple of decent fight scenes, some very funny moments (Willow hiding her underwear, the guy having the same outfit as Angel), some nice dialogue, it features both Spike and Angel, the complexity of the characters - Ford's evil/sympathy provoking character - and of course a poignant moment at the end with Buffy and Giles conversation above the grave. And it doesn't draw on to many past moments in the series - it stands alone with a plot that is started and concluded in the episode.
