i love love love serenity but for some reason the deaths in it never hit me as hard as say kayle getting shot in episode 1 ormal nearly dying,or even the armykiddying, i just dont get it. maybe its something in the writing or maybe im still shell shocked. i cant figure it out.

Maybe you feel more for Kaylee. I know Wash's death hit me harder than Book's because of the two, I liked Wash more. I think I also kinda figured him to be untouchable, bit like Xander in Buffy. Someone who would always be there.

Good move on Joss' part though. I soooo thought everyone was going to die when they all hunkered down to battle the reavers.

Nope i absolutely love wash i just cant explain it, the deaths just felt flatter than any of the TV casualty's. Dont get me wrong other parts of the movie really get to me emotionally like when river runs thru the door after simon is hurt. I felt like ithad been toned though for a more commericial audience somehow.

BROWNBUG howdy :)

Well I don't know but it may be very simple (I could be absolutely backwards about this) but did you see Serenity first? If you did that may be the answer.

As in my case the wife and I saw Serenity on rented dvd first. With the death of two crew members it was sad but not near as sad as if we had been with the tv series from the begining. I can only imagine the emotions that were felt by the browncoats that have been there from the start. The loss of Book and Wash was a bad ordeal but so was watching Mr.Universy taste the operatives blade and Fanti and Mingo bite the big one. Not knowing the characters at the time means their demise was not so great.

I do agree that once ones sees the tv series and the crew become family like the emotions go a bit deeper. Kaylee "had" me in the pilot eps when she took that first bite of strawberry. She left no doubt that she loved that red ball of happiness with the batting of thoes pretty eyes :)

Once Dobson did the dirty deed of putting a bullet in her belly I was almost like Jayne, ready to carve my initials into his heart. Oh well, that's what GREAT writting will do to you.

nope i savoured SERENITY till after firefly. But of course like many i joined late and heard of serenity first. i find it very odd that i emotionally react to the series more, i dare say its something simple like the time given to deal with something. the deaths in the movie feel fairly rushed whereas in the TV series joss is given time to really pull the heart strings. there is no time to grieve in the film and we cant linger too long. but even angry Mal in serenity cant beat tortured angry mal "do you wanna see the real me" of the series. so yes im guessing im putting it down to the "action quota" ie we cant leave it too long before something exciting has to happen to entertain the popcorn generation out there will get bored.however putting this in perspective i still hold serenity in my top5 all time films, and the tv series as the best i have watched.

probably why i just spent stupid money on a mal gun lol

hey brownbug, you and i have discussed this very issue out in the real world.

i know what you mean, i wasnt as emotionally attached to the characters in the film, as i was in the series.

i didnt get the feeling of family and the ship didnt feel like home anymore, but as you know, it didnt stop me loving the film more than chocolate ( and i fg love chocolate)

Yeah, I think Book and Wash's deaths were a bit rushed. No real time to mourn them. Especially Wash's. It was like, "I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch how I..." *Crash* Duck Zoe! And then they're running and the Reavers are coming. Hell, Nandi got a better funeral than our BDHs did... =( It was kind of irritating to me that we didn't get a chance to see the rest of the crew mourn a little more. Like, see a shot of each character's reaction at the funeral. I think that must be it.

I agree that there wasn't much time given to the characters to mourn. When Wash died (which totally took me by surprise) I thought Zoe was going to die too when she was fighting the Reavers and not giving a damn.
I guess in the tv series, the amount of time allowed for more development, but in the feature film, they only had a set amount of time to say everything they wanted to say.
I wish that there'll be a sequel (as I'm sure everyone does)

I don't know what to tell you.
I saw Serenity first.
Shepherd's death didn't really wrench my heart even after seeing the series.
Wash's death, the moment of death, made me jump and kind of stare, just at the shock of it. What wrenched my heart, and still does (to an even greater extent after watching the series) was Zoe's "Come on, baby, we've gotta go! Baby, please...!"
Tearing up just thinking about that, here... Gah! *wipes eyes*

Took the words right out of my mouth DTH. I was hit real hard by Wash's death, but not as much by Book's. I kind of figured Book's was coming because that would allow him to take his secrets with him and allow Joss an out for not telling us. Wash I kind of likened to Xander as DTH pointed out. He might get hurt, but he would always be there.
