If any of y'all saw The Handmaid's Tale, it was a very similar experience. Big effed-up future with bad fascist/martial law in control and hope seemingly lost.
Children Of Men was extremely well made and acted- it may well end up being considered a classic of the genre, I feel it deserves to; but damn was it disturbing. I guess that means it did it's job, though.

I've heard people describe it as "grim", but I think "hellish" is a bit more accurate.

It's brilliant. Excellent from start to finish. The attention to detail is incredible, from the ads in the background to the dreary landscapes of browns, greys and dark greens, dotted with decaying animals.

grim, hellish and maybe all too possible - well i'm not sure about the childless part, but the world going to hell in a handbasket - that part seems feasible....

i missed this on the big screen - (those big scary movie malls with the screaming kids and unruly punks - ooops - i'm truning into my father again...), but i bought the film as soon as it came out. Funny how different it is from the book by P.D. James.

I thought everything about this movie was top notch. Great acting all around - did you notice the little jabs at our current administration scattered through the film?... i saw at least one Slash W in there.

now if only i can find a little bit of that strawberry koff.......

One thought I had, though...no one wants a grim future, that's why The Handmaid's Tale was so intense- it was control all the way, but hidden under a layer of civility. Neo-NEOCons were in power, but it was only grim for the peeps at the very bottom, and they were effectively silenced. I'm anxious to see it.

BTW, if anyone out there has only seen the movie version of "The Handmaid's Tale" and not read the book, please go get the book out of the library right away and read it. It has a much better story and is much deeper, more contemplative. I loved the book and was quite disappointed in the movie. (I usually am.)

The novel goes further into the apocalyptic British society, which is only hinted in the film, but we do see in the movie a bit of what’s left of society, when Theo visits his cousin, Nigel (Danny Huston), in order to get the transit papers – that small enclave of civilization still exits for the powerful.

But for the most part, the citizens, faced with no future without another generation too carry on, are left to live their lives as best they can. Jasper’s hideout isn’t even safe – in a world gone mad, only the mad can survive. Children of Men is a very foreboding look at one possible future.

Wow!

Two observations:
1. Was anyone else awestruck at the single handheld camera work throughout the action scenes? - Long, long LONG scenes with gunfire and stunts and explosions and all kinds of stuff and NO changes of POV. Just one guy with a camera. Watch the Canterbury chase scene again with that in mind. Then watch the Bex Hill scene, from when

The Fish take the baby till when Faron gets her back and gets her out past the soldiers.

2. Did you notice the dogs and cats? Everywhere. It didn't hit me till the next morning that if you couldn't have kids, you'd have dogs, cats or both. Something little and cuddly that will accept your nuturing. No wonder there were so many well-fed pets in a nation struggling to stay on its feet long enough for the current lives to span.
