I finally found the courage to lend out one of my SERENITY copies.

Two weeks ago, and it hasn't been returned, even though they claimed to have watched it already. It's clearly true, because they've recalled scenes and people they wouldn't've known about otherwise.

They've borrowed DVD's before and only returned about half. Their son borrowed a cassette once about 15 years ago and I found out weeks or months later that his tape recorder "ate" it and he never replaced it. He was a child at the time, so in that sense I could accept it from him, but his parents never even acknowledged it, even though they obviously knew about it. If they were embarassed that they couldn't afford it, I would've understood. Still, if there was a toy he wanted, he never failed to get it.

So, should I be worried?

Well, no, but it still could've been damaged in some other way, or "lost" behind the entertainment center (their usual answer for unreturned DVDs and why they keep "forgetting" about them).

Ok, here's what I don't get, in July 2006 there were about 6,525,170,264 people on earth, the number has grown since then, out of all of those people why would you lend your Serenity DVD to ones who consistently steal that which is loaned to them?

Assuming they decide what to keep at random you had, based on what you have said, a 50% chance of losing it. If, on the other hand, they keep the good things for themselves you were pretty much screwed from the start.

Yet another reason I bought myself a second copy...I knew of the possibility, yet I still hoped I would be proven wrong this time (they're family after all). I figured the potential sacrifice would be worth it this time, considering the movie is an experience that should be shared!

By the way, I don't personally know a single person who IS that trustworthy, anyway.

Edit: And it wasn't only good stuff that they kept. Most of what I remember were things I had planned to sell (like Queen of the Damned), which they didn't know about.

*hugs* Unfortunately, some folks is just like that. Actually, I gave my first set away to friends who couldn't afford to buy it (they'd had the most gawd-awful 4 years I'd ever seen in my life) so I gave it to them and went Firefly-less for a month until I could afford to get myself another set.

I now have my own set and the loaner set. And the loaner set is about to go out to my mom's cousin, whom I learned today, *likes* SF and fantasy unlike my mum.

You lend to family, it's like giving stuff away, only not as satisfying.

Here's what you do (and what you shoulda done when the kid ruined your tape years ago): Say: "Oh, that's too bad. Well, I got it at Wal-Mart/Best Buy/Amazon and I'm sure you can find another copy there. When do you think you'll be doing that?"

I know pleanty of people ripe for browncoating, unfortunatly i just can't quite yet pull myself to lend them the DVD's! I mean what would i do with out them during that time (i pretty much watch the entire series and movie once a week) and if they lost it that might just put me in a killing mood :S

I'm sorry jwhedonaddict that this has happened.

I learned early on that I COULD NOT live without my Firefly/Serenity DVD's home with me, where I could pick them up when I wanted to and watch, yet I wanted to share what I'd found with my family and friends. So I figured out a way to budget to have extras of each on hand at all times, so that I could recruit by sharing. And I made myself a promise at the time, that if the sets didn't return to me, then I would consider it a BC victory. Then I'd hope the love of the 'Verse would infect them so much that they'd be moved to buy extra copies and recruit too. It's not always easy to budget for it, but I've found myself a happier person since I let it go.

Exactly. I count it as gone and my contribution to populating the world with more Browncoats... because that's what we truly need for more... more Browncoats!

It actually does put me in a killing mood, lol.
I love my Firefly/Serenity and I still watch it often. But I also want to help others find this same love, so I make sure I have a way to share it with them. It took me a half a year to afford keeping a copy of each on hand to recruit with, but I watched for sales and finally got the two of them here and stored on my shelf to share.

One thing I've found to be consistently true about BC's....and I've become more this way myself. We share and we take care of each other.
