Hey Deepgirl!

Okay, I'm also a member of the English Lit graduate club. And I completely understand your worry that you won't be qualified for anything in particular when you finish your degree.

My circumstances are a bit different as I live in Ireland, and jobs wise we're doing pretty well. That being said, I was terrified when I left University. It's not like they have ads looking for English Grads in the newspaper!

My first job after leaving Uni was Credit Analysis. I worked for one of the largest banks in the world. I was working with Business graduates, IT graduates, all sorts. I got the job not because I was qualified in a business field, but because I used my interview to explain the skills an English degree gives you. You learn to research. You learn to create reports on complicated material in a very short space of time. You learn to communicate, orally and in writing. You learn to pick out the information you need from a *vast* array of resources. You also tend to pick up word processing skills and typing skills, if for no other reason than you are an English student in despa- despi- desperi- dire need of a spellchecker.

Yes, I went on to do other courses after I finished my degree. At first I did a business and IT diploma just to have something technical on my CV. I did not learn half the skills I learned through my English degree. After that I went from looking for a cosy office job that would pay the bills and then some (which my English degree had no trouble helping me with) to deciding what it was I wanted to do with my life. I do want to write, which right now is still a hobby, but I also wanted to teach adults. So I got a qualification in teaching computers - which took about a year part time - and a certificate in teaching English as a foreign language - which took a couple of weeks part time and is internationally recognised so it's basically a passport to anywhere in the world! The downside of all this is that I'm earning less than I was and will be for at least a bit longer, but the major upside is that I'm working at a job I love. Nothing buys that feeling :)

For *any* job, experience is vital. Internships, volunteer work, even that Saturday job at Four Star Pizza will help you get your foot in the door.

If it's writing and books you adore then there are jobs out there that revolve around them. Have you thought about a career in Abstract Writing? I'm fuzzy on the details, but you'd need a strong track record in writing to land that position. Still, it's an actual writing job that pays pretty well, so it's worth asking about. There's also copy editing, web editing, technical writing ... a whole bunch of jobs that involve writing that none of us ever think of. You may need to learn some new skills (like HTML or Web design software for web editing) but there are loads of classes available and most of the time you won't need a qualification in that area, just proof you know what you're doing!

Boy, I'm really taking over the thread here... anyway, I just wanted to speak up in favour of English Lit. I did adore studying it and I'd go back and do my Masters tomorrow if I could! And while you won't be guaranteed a career in something in particular, you'll still pick up an amazing amount of skills.

hey DTH and Yinyang, (and anyone else who's only just arrived ^^ )

so, just to go off on a complete tangent, i found the little part of me i remember from when i was wee again today, the part that got excited in toyshops and made long list's of things to save up alllll his pennies for, was doing the exact tsame thing this afternoon ^^

the depressing thing is that i was in the kitchenware department...
