While I doubt that there is any huge amount of money to be made from the English (usually the English made money off everyone else...whoa hold on now, get back, it was a joke, alright? a joke. sheesh, sensitive Brits...), I still would love to see people study and love their language more. I know, I know, the glut of majors that MsG spoke of, but I can't help but feel that it has become a default major for a lot of them, as is the General Studies or General Liberal Arts majors where they are offered. Something people fall into because, well, they speak the language and can't decide on another.
I am talking about the ones with a passion for it. The ones who enjoy putting words together and taking them apart. The ones who understand that it is a living thing that can touch another's heart tenderly or twist that heart around so that it ceases to function. The ones who realize that you can learn all about history by tracing word origins. The ones who understand that we are the keepers of a sacred flame that we dare not let be extinguished by apathy or sloth. If that is why you want to be an English major, then that is what you should be.
If you're in it for fame and riches, go with the money maker, and maybe someday the fame migh come. If you go with the English, don't expect either to come knocking at your door. But your cottage might be a happier one, just the same.

Jonny- yup it's nifty to pull the words apart and do word origins and such. I make my kids memorize the definitions of morphemes for that very reason ( though it does lead them to question why there are so many roots that mean blood)Anyway, teaching is great( ok I think so I know Rugbug would disagree, but she was teaching elementary school so that might have had something to do with it) so go ahead and get that English degree and teach kids to love it as much as you do:)
Dug- I shall assume the pendants are lovely, but as my computer will not allow ebay ( school doesn't want us going there) I can't see them. I'll try and bop over when I get home. I love jewlery:)
PR- see I can totally imagine you in marketing or in graphic art designing logos for companies because you have such a good knowledge base and you could really get into the symbolic representations

As for the major thing, it's different for everybody. Whether you go for what you love or for what will get you the money is your own choice, dependant upon your priorities. As a photography major (how many of those do you find?) I completely understand wondering what kinds of jobs are out there, and I have heard the question "What are you going to do with that?" more times than I can count.
Another thing to keep in mind that the average student changes their major twice throughout their college career. If you later decide that something else would be better, then that is always an option. Another thing you can do is take a minor that would broaden your job abilities. Basically, you just need to do some soul searching and explore all the options, then choose what you think is right for your situation. There is nothing wrong with being an english major if that is your passion, nor is there anything wrong with being a major that would give better job oportunities.

Does anyone think my students would notice if I hid under my desk and went to sleep???
PR- hey you could always go to medical school and be an .. oh freak I cannot remember what it's called now. My brother in law is in med school and he's going to be this it's a general practitioner who specializes in preventative medicine. It's got a special title and everything.. Ok I will email and ask him. Anyway, he uses alternative meds as well as regular traditional stuff and he focuses more on keeping people healthy. It's way cool, but mostly back east.

As for graphics design in marketing, PR definitely has the skills and the talent to do so. I can give one caveat from someone who did a lot of advertising, albeit from the radio side. This would be a use of your talent that can only be compared to whoring. It's using your talent as a craft instead of using it for art. If the job/ client/ market want you to do something that is *completely* against your artistic vision it would be your job to do it that way. It can be a very artistically rewarding career, but only if you can find happiness within that constraint. Not saying it's a bad job at all, cause it isn't; it's just another of life's little cases of not being the boss. Many people can find joy in solving the puzzle of designing for someone else.
