Hey everyone!

Replying to the anti-crush thing from the last thread, I would have to say pretty much all exceedingly famous people. (Excluding Firefly actors 
) They just all kinda get on my nerves...the way they all have to look pretty, and they aren't allowed to do/say anything wrong, and a lot of them just seem like unsavory people...but really that hate is based on the fact that our society holds people whose only talent is to entertain in the highest regard when they really do nothing most of the time. I mean come on, these people get payed thousands of dollars to go to a party! It's not like that requires any skill, it's just that people know their name! Ahem...sorry for the mini-rant... 
Whitefall that major definitely won't ruin you life if it's what you will like doing! I mean it might not get you a whole lot of money, but that isn't really the key to happiness!
DeepGirl I don't really know what one would do with an English major other than teach or do journalism or something, although if you really like English stuff you could probably find something with it, but then I'm also not an expert on those things so you might be better off just not paying attention to me.

To weigh in on the English/Creative Writing degree thing, I think the major thing is knowing what you want to do after you graduate. Getting any degree without an idea of how you're going to apply it once you're out in the real world will cause you trouble down the road, regardless of what that degree is. I say, do some research -- keeping in mind that in our modern society, every single thing we encounter, from the coffee you drink to the commercials you fastward through to the servers running this very message board, is created, processed, shipped, or sold by *someone* -- and find an area that piques your interest, and work backwards from that to what degree would best support that sort of career.
It is true that you can continue to write no matter what job you land in, and these days good communication skills are important across the board. That said, I really do think that having a career that you love, and a job that you honestly look forward to going to every day, can make life so much more enjoyable.
Btw Whitefall, I know I mentioned this before, but I'm still in favor of starting at the place that gives you a scholarship, and transferring to the more prestigious school later. Your first couple of years of college are spent on general ed and the 101 level requirements for your major anyway, and the California universities are so good about transfers, it seems a shame to pass up a scholarship, even for just those first two years.

Ah! The smell of ammonia in the morning. Smells like victory. Oops; that's another story. Now they use giant copy machines. And we don't even use them that much. You send a copy of your work by Email to the machine shop who uses their own computer to bring it up and use it to program their machining centers.
The machinist is also gone. Most people standing next to a milling machine just clamp the raw material in the fixture and push a button. Oh; they have to close the door so the don't get splattered with flying chips. Then they check the part with preset gauges.
The assembly lines are mostly robots. See the first "Terminator". That movie is little old and advances in assembly lines continue.
Technology has replaced many art forms. I have to admit I had a lot of pride in my dark straight lines. You could read my drawings across the room. My handwriting was not to good, so my notes were not the best. But now I just type them in. I am thankful they don't worry about grammer. Good spelling is what they care about most. So I have a dictionary at work.
That is why I enjoy reading about MsG's classroom experiences. I'm sure teaching has also gone through changes, but the students sound a lot like my contemporaries.

You're good! The "wrapped in an enigma" screamed Taco Bell at me so I could resist the "tied up with a puzzle (feels like 'pretzel') and "sprinkled". I'm silly sometimes.
