Your comment betrays a shocking lack of understanding for the complexity and rigor of space travel. I don't understand what she did, but NASA has the smartest people in the world, so I'm not going to question the way things are done or why and simply accept that they are furthering my understanding of the universe.

Astronauts are people, too. Why should they be exempt from all the drama?
I couldn't believe this story when I first heard it. At first I thought it was some kind of geek joke!

I used to dream about becoming an astronaut, but after seeing her "before" & "after" pictures, I have changed my mind.
I think I'll stay with a career that doesn't age you and make you look like a baglady.

That could be the toll taken by space psychosis.
That woman's poor kids, though. I can't even imagine what they must be going through.
Who knew shuttle pilots were such playas? Is that a pilot thing?

Too bad the bad overshadows the good:

Three things that need to be remembered.
1) You have no idea how old the file photo is, she became an astronaut in 1996, that's 11 years ago and it's quite possible that the photo is that old.
2) Mug shots are never flatering, just look at the ones we've seen of wayward celebs looking like something the cat dragged in. One of the things I love about police shows on TV is just how perfect the mug shots are compared to the real deal.
3) If the picture is from 1996 then she's had twin girls in the interim, I suspect that is probably draining.

Don't you have to be...er, sane to be an astronaut?
