Favourite movie with a depressing ending.

For anyone who thinks their life is out of balance with too much happiness, and feels the need to set things back to an even keel, I would heartily recommend Pelle the Conqueror. Starts out bleak and takes a three hour descent through greater levels of despair as only the Swedes can do it. Watch for those few tidbits of hope to be brutally dashed.

Yes, the ending is depressing, too, though by the time you get there, the numbness may well have trumped any other feeling.

A Scanner Darkly's ending is kinda screwy... anticlimactic but will leave an impression with you from then on after seeing it.

Silent Hill had an oddly depressing ending to it.

Bob Roberts is my runner up... the ending was horrible (Not in a bad quality way) but it was also reasonable that it had to end that way.

and the one that takes the cake is...

"O".. the modern remake of Shakespeare's Othello... if there is one movie that I will never watch again it's this one. Seriously great performances all around for a "Teen" drama.

Honorable Mentions because it's a TV show instead of a Movie go to:

Jurassic Bark & The Luck of the Fryrish from Futurama... only TV show episodes I've ever seen and shedded a tear. Both episodes at the end just want you to go "AAWWWWW".

The Hole.

Not a scary film, definitely a horrifying one.

Memorable villain, and even more memorable ending.

I gotta throw down "Saving Private Ryan," if only for the emotional beatdown of seeing Tom Hanks' character getting killed after all the crap he's gone through in the past 2+ hours. That and you expect it's Hanks' character standing at the grave in the beginning...till you realize his character is too old in 1944 for him to look that spritely. But mostly the whole Hanks-getting-killed combined with the Hanks-versus-Damon scene after

The canstant gardner is a pretty cool movie with a fairly depressing endinng

American Graffiti (ending's message: "You can't stay 17 forever." Life goes on and people die. Some people are successful and some people aren't.)

American Beauty (just when Kevin Spacey's character realizes the beauty in life, he takes a bullet to the head)

Brokeback Mountain (ending's message: society destroys that which it does not tolerate, some things will never change, life goes on)

Blade Runner - Director's Cut (My god, this has to be the most depressing, yet optimistic ending ever. Too complicated for words.)

So you're of the camp that think that ROTK should have ended with Sam sucking Frodo's cock and then bricking into his mouth. I'm a Kevin Smith fan, so after seeing CLERKS 2 and his rant on RINGS in the EVENING 2 DVD, he had forever ruined LOTR for me. And I actually liked the trilogy. The first part more than the others, but still...

I happen to love CONTACT, both the book and the movie, but I won't go there.

And of course the WONDERFUL LIFE ending. That's like one of the top ten endings to movies ever, next to "Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautful friendship" and "You're all clear, kid. Now let's blow this thing and go home."

And if you want a depressing adn yet uplifting ending, the ending to LAST NIGHT is my personal fave. The end of the world actually happens, but you can't help but feel uplifted as you see the two leads dispense with the guns and kiss.
