Favourite movie with a depressing ending.

First, anyone that says Steel Magnolias, I will shoot you down. That said....

Beneath The Planet Of The Apes is my choice. Heston throwing the big switch on Earth was just cool, darkly speaking. Plus the whole flick is just wack.

Well, I don't think they meant to depress anybody, but the ending of Pleasantville sure did have that effect on me. I mean--here's Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon trapped in a 1950s sitcom. And because of their influence, the real world starts creeping in. And the sitcom mother (played by Joan Allen) cheats on her husband (william H. Macy) with the guy who runs the soda fountain (Jeff Daniels). At the end of the movie Joan Allen and William H. Macy are sitting on a park bench talking. Macy is crying and telling her that he loves her and forgives her and wants her back, etcetera. The camera cuts to her reaction, and she's all emotional as well, and just as I'm thinking "ah, redemption, they're going to get back together," the camera cuts again to what I think is going to be Macy, but he's gone! And sitting on the bench there is Daniels. They're both confused about how he got there, Macy is nowhere to be found, and the movie ends. Argh! What a horrible ending! I loved the movie up to that point, but I haven't seen it since, because of the lousy, lousy ending.

Gladiator- I know, I know, Maximus has his vengeance, but did he have to die too? I know it made perfect sense, and was right for the story, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Dr. Strangelove- After all the hilarity, the parody, the satire and the Peter Seller's genius, they all get blown up.

Man on the Moon- The travesty of Jim Carrey not even being nominated for an Oscar not withstanding, to know the uniqueness of Andy Kaufmann, and of his tragic demise...it hurt. Alot.

I'm kidding (kinda) I thought Children of Men had a very bittersweet ending.

The end to DR. STRANGELOVE is one of the best endings ever because it manages to play a nuclear apocalypse for laughs. It's the ultimate black comedy. And the ending to PLEASANTVILLE I actually found uplifting. The fact that this formerly restrictive and literally black and white world is exploding with color and possibility is invigorating. And the end with Bill Macy and Joan Allen was great. "Do you know what's going to happen?" "I don't know. Do you?" "No. (starts laughing) I have no idea." And it's just a simple cut and reveal of Joan and Jeff in the same situation and him concurring as well "I havn't the faintest idea." I don't think that ruined the movie at all. Especially with Fiona Apple's cover of "Across the Universe" playing over the soundtrack.

You want a really depressing ending? How about HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG. The whole Armenian family dies, and Jen Connelly, after going through an incredibly traumatic experience, is then asked "Is this your house?" And the look on her face as she says "No." just breaks your heart. I read somewhere that a really good feel-bad movie is just an much as an emotional pallat cleanser as a feel-good flick, maybe even moreso. The whole movie was just a very dark tragedy. And I loved it.

Also, the end to THE AVIATOR was also one that could leave some people in a funk. After three hours of Howard Hughs overcoming insurmountable obstacles and fresh off of getting the Spruce Goose to actually fly, the movie end with him in a dirty bathroom, repeating "The way of the future" over and over again. It ends with him officially losing his mind.

One of mine is Lost in Translation...I realize there was no way for Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansen to run off and live "happily ever after", so their parting had that depression factor to me.
