Favourite movie with a depressing ending.

yeah, I was going to say that, not so much a depressing ending though, I started sobbing literally 1 minute in and didn't stop the whole way through, the ending was actually a relief (for them, not for myself). but it's beautiful and everyone should see it.

but for just the endings:

butch cassidy and the sundance kid
galipoli
wicker man
dogville (another one that's depressing all the way through, but I loved it)

id say Shaun of the Dead because...

I mean, all of their friends were killed(besides Diane if you watch the special features), but of course that last scene were Shaun and zombie Ed are playing Time twisters just lifts your spirits that in a way the movie ended nicely

but id have to say Serenity was the only one to make me actually cry for a sole character's death, its the first time ive cared so much for a character that i cried like he was my friend

I don't know if I can call it a favourite but by sheer dint of how depressing the ending is, Requiem for a Dream. Basically, if you've ever wanted to end a relationship, put this on and then ask your unloved one after it for some time to think your life over. They'll agree, probably because they'll be rethinking their life too.

All the above have one downbeat ending. This one has four.

Second the REQUIEM ending. In a movie where the lightest ending for a character was prison, it makes you swear off aspirin, let alone other drugs.

Serenity, at first in the theaters it was a great ending even though wash died it left everything ready to rock for another adventure.... but now it seems it could be the end of our beloved story all together... so that is why it is depressing to me.

"McCabe and Mrs. Miller". Warren Beatty dying unnoticed as the snow drifts over him, while Julie Christie is taking opium as oblivion drifts over her. And you just know that although McCabe beat the three gunmen, the company still won.

I think he was both in shock and denial. Once he accepted the truth of the situation and had that memory flash of his wife there was no hesitation. Those few extra bullets he fired were just the icing on the cake.

For me, the most manic-depressive movie endings, I can recall are:

‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’. Good movie, but he kept on killing.

‘Star Wars: Return of the Sith’. No offence to those Star Wars fans out there (I’m one myself), but it brings me to tears (of laughter) whenever I hear Darth Vader scream ‘NOOOOOOO…’. That’s just sad.

All the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ movies because they always died in the end.

I know people will probably hate me for this but ‘Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’. If you’re going to adapt a 1500+ book into a movie (even if their is more to be said), end at the logical point of the movie, not the thirty something endings that followed.

‘The Village’ and ‘The Others’, because it was meant to be so clever, but I knew what was going to happen from the very start.

And don’t get me started on ‘Contact’.

On a positive note though, the best ending I’ve ever see was: ’It’s a Wonderful Life’. That got me teary.
