City of Angels. It was a shallow remake of Wim Wenders "Wings of Desire" (or "Wings over Berlin" depending on whether you watch the dubbed version vice the original German release). But I don't fault it for its shallowness. 98% of the remake was a fun, entertaining date movie. But then ending was completely broken.
In Wim Wenders' original version, the angel gives up his angelhood (real word?) to live with the woman who has captured his heart. And they live happily ever after.
In the superstar-studded Hollywood remake, the angel renounces his angelhood the day before the woman he loves gets mowed down by a truck while she's out riding her bicycle. It so SUCKED! It was obvious that it was done just for the shock value. Not because it in any way made the story right.

Remake of "The Planet of the Apes"
Last few minutes of the movie remake were more faithful to the original Pierre Boulle book. But it was VERY clumsily done. So jarring as to completely yank me out of the story. When I watch the remake now, I stop watching after they win the battle... just change the channel then and pretend that he stays with his new friends and makes a new life.

I know they've got different sensibilities, but damn, nobody lives happily ever after in that movie. Still, an excellent film.

(In side comment about City of Angels, it did have the value of showing Nick Cage (I think the character's name is Seth?) some of the stuff Dennis Franz tells him: yeah there's a lotta good, but there's bad too, and you gotta make the good get you through the bad. And love is fleeting. So it DID work for the movie, to show Seth, hey, them's the beans of mortal love versus immortal love (amo Dei))
ON TOPIC,
I'd have to throw Closer into the list. While I love the movie cause it's an adult love story, EVERYONE pretty much ends up unhappy or lost (excepting maybe Portman's character).
However, since I prefer to see realism over idealism, I love the movie cause of that.
(Ironically, I try to live by ideal versus real standards of living....hmmmm)

To me is was pretty clear it was the woman's head, because the psycho guy said he took 'her pretty head' as a souvenir, but almost everyone I talk to seems to think it was the unborn child. To me, while that would be more evil, it makes no sense. The killer didn't know that the officer didn't know his wife was pregnant, and would have had no way to prove it was in fact his child anyway, while his wife's head would be totally recognizable.
Either way, the box is evil and it's not a movie I think I could bring myself to watch again, but I've been wondering about this for awhile...

Arlington Road with Jeff Bridges.
One of the first movies that I saw that actually surprised me with the ending. And it is the depressing ending that made me like the movie. If it would have had a happy ending than it would have been average at best.
And one of my all time favorites Donnie Darko.
