Wonder Woman, why?

Okay, I understand the reasons why I want to see WW, that being the outfit and the fact that Joss is directing it, but what I'm trying to figure out is why everyone is going so ga-ga over the prospect of a WW movie.

WW was never, IMO, a great character, ranking only slightly higher than Aquaman and slightly lower than the Flash. Now granted, I could be categorized as a Marvel Whore, though my favorite super hero was, is, and always will be Superman, but I still don't get it. So she's a powerful female character, hell she was DCs token for a long time. But all she really is is a rehash of Superman given a short skirt a lasso and an invisible jet.

Now, I'm not trying to incite a flame war, I'm simply trying to understand, and I wanted to make my opinion clear so you all know where I'm coming from.

Actually, Wonder Woman (the current post-Crisis one) is interesting 'cause she's the exact opposite of Superman and Batman.

She's from a warrior culture, and (unlike the men) she has no illusions about not killing (she'll avoid it if possible, but she knows that sometimes it's necessary to end people expediently). She's also known (in the JLA comics) for being willing to cut deals with her enemies --they'll spar with her and help her train, and she'll get the warden to knock time off their sentences. Another interesting thing is that she doesn't really do the whole "secret identity" thing. She dresses down on occasion, but it's more like a celebrity slumming it --she sometimes gets recognized. This is probably because she has no real "family" ties outside of Themiscyra, aside from her friends the Sandsmarks (Helena and her daughter, Cassie a.k.a. Wonder Girl).

Plus, being magic-based, she's actually a bit tougher than Superman, and she has actual combat training (as opposed to Clark "swing wildly and try to hit something" Kent).

The only reason my hopes are up is because it's going to be a Joss movie. Other than that I'd pass on this movie. I'd probably never even see it on video.

Wonder Woman just isn't a very interesting character IMO.

Don't flame me, but even as a kid, I thought Wonder Woman was a little silly. I used to watch the old Linda Blair reruns on TBS or something. I'm sure the actual comics are better, but the spinning? And the Lasso of Truth and an invisible jet? I mean, it's kinda lame. Just thinking about it makes me giggle. But I'm sure Joss will make an awesome movie. Don't know if I'll see it in the theater, but I'd rent it.

Cybersnark makes a good point. WW is magic based and as such is a weakness to Superman. She could defeat him if she chose to do so. She is a warrior. She has killed. I think her greatest hindrance has been her rogue gallery.

What's so great about WW? She's this powerful woman that can tangle with the greatest superheroes. She's intelligent, compassionate, strong, and beautiful just to name a few qualities. She's a strategist and linguist and leader. Can you say that about Superman? Batman has way more training than Supes does.

I know it's a bit a of a stretch, but bear with me here: Zoe. She’s a strong, confident, strategist in a gorgeous package. While her prowess is intimidating to many men, she does have this tender feminine side that Wash sees and appreciates. She's capable of love and war. I (probably nobody else) think of WW when I think of Zoe. Joss just got the writing better. WW has had dozens of writers adding and subtracting over the years.

Anyway...that's why for me. She's all woman yet equal to men in her field.

If you want to be super picky...Lynda Carter.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that the creator of WW had a goal. Women were struggling for equal footing. Comics were hugely popular and reached a large audience. He decided, with the help of his wife, to create a female archetype. He wanted women to be proud of themselves. It's okay to have masculine qualities like strength and power...because they're not masculine, they're human, just like your feminine qualities. Be proud of all you have to offer. He was an odd and interesting man.

I'm very much with the OP on this one. I understand why Joss is doing it, but, to me, it just feels like a waste of his talent...though that's just my opinion on a WW movie getting in the way ;)
