Sci-Fi Books

I noticed there was a "what other sci-fi would you recommend" thread, but it only seemed to cover TV. I was wondering, since this community seems so literate and well-spoken, how many people read sci-fi, and what they tend to enjoy about it.
Personally, my absolute favourite sci-fi author is Peter F Hamilton - he wrote a series of books (which I *think* were also launched in America) called "The Night's Dawn" trilogy. Spectacular - if you like the speculative aspect of Firefly, I can guarantee you'd enjoy these books. Like Whedon, he doesn't believe in sprinkling aliens all over the landscape, and he really invests time in making his characters so interesting that you feel like you've lost a member of the family when you finish the books.
What do you guys think? Anyone read them? Any others?
