Rather ambitious. Perhaps too ambitious for a single game. Taken in isolation each of your ideas should be workable (with the exception of resource trading among cities that seems like it would get tedious fast) but adding all of them may overwhelm the game. The problem with AI helpers is that even when they are very good they are still rather suboptimal as decision makers particularly where many different options are available to choosef from.
Sorry to be so negative.

*walks through the not-really-solid-after-all brick barrier between 33 1/3 and 34.
It's awfully dark in here. I've made it through everyone no need for helmets!
*Takes a few steps
Uh Oh...

Oh hey, it works.
But um, where does this leave us in the thread progession?
Isn't sanity really a one trick pony, anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy...ooh hoo hoo hoo... the skys the limit!

I don't know, but running through the walls is fun.
Just to make things a little more interesting around here.....

It's as simple as that
So tell me I'm mad
Roll me up and breathe me in
Come to my madness
My opium den
Come to my madness
Make sense of it again."

Quote:I wasn't planning on having to oversee each trade. I was thinking more of a Rise of Nations system, you set up a trade route, decide what is to be traded and for what then let the caravans sort themselves out. In AoE3 there's a sort of trade route system, on the map is a trade route that subsequent research converts from horse and cart to stage coach and finally train. You can set the trade posts that you capture along the route to collect either Food, Wood, Coin or Experience Points (for upgrading your home city) each time the trade cart/coach/train passes you collect a quantity of that resource. I was thinking of a system more like that.

but adding all of them may overwhelm the game.
Quote:Possibly, though the AI helpers would be aimed specifically at helping with mundane tasks only, ensuring a steady supply of resources and making sure sustainable resources are sustained. At the maximum limit to their abillities I'd probably let a Mayor build city buildings that it's city doesn't have as long as it doesn't break a budget it's been given, or a General build military units with similar criteria. Also I'd have the player deciding who to attack and where, and the General would just ensure that all troops were engaged in battle, perhaps setup field hospitals behind the fighting. Generally just the simple mundane click fest tasks, nothing in the realm of strategy/tactics or real decision making.
The problem with AI helpers is that even when they are very good they are still rather suboptimal as decision makers particularly where many different options are available to choosef from.

No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

Well you know your coding skills better than me but I figure if you're up to the task of an RTS in the first place the extra features are mostly just extra typing and testing.

Here's the problem I'm seeing. Say you've got a city that needs wood and has I dunno feathers and there is another city that needs the feathers and has wood. OK they trade. Now say a bit later on a different city needs the wood more. Now if there are a small number of cities you can jiggle these resources fairly easy but as the number of cities increases the more you need to continually look at what resources each city needs and what resources they are producing to make sure you're trading things to the right places to make the most of your cities.
