Rather than a city adding directly to the Nations influence, cities are used to 'capture' regions. That way as the civilisation grows the number of entities that can trade with each other stay relativly low. Then if you wish you could have one region that concentrates on Farming, another on logging, mining etc.

Can you believe that yesterday morning I decided I wanted to make apple dumplings instead of a pie? ....Several hours later I've got 12 lovely little dumplings ready to go in the oven, but the damned thing won't heat up above 250F. I had to pack everything up and take it to my aunt's. Some of the sauce spilled in my car on the way, big mess!
But, in the end, they turned out very good. Everything was very tasty this year. There was a scrumptious pumpkin cheesecake.
I thought I was going to have to send my grandfather to his room, though. First he kept trying to snitch my raw dough for the dumplings (ew) and then he kept trying to eat the veggies I had cut up for my curry. I had to keep kicking him out of the kitchen!
