Ok, so this afternoon I was listening to some tunes when Cry Baby Cry came on by the Beatles from the second disc of the White Album. Ok, so remember in the pilot episode the lines that Mal and Wash say towards the beginning when they are salvaging the cargo and the alliance cruiser bears down on them??? Remember, "Cry baby cry" from Mal, and then Wash goes "Make your mother sigh"!!!! If you've ever heard Cry Baby Cry by the Beatles then you'll know that those are exactly the first two lines of the song!!!!! Holy crap!!!! Has anybody else ever realized this? I'm gonna feel pretty ridiculous if this is common knowledge.
Anyway, the real question I have is do people still know the Beatles in Joss's verse? I mean that's a pretty big coincidence if you ask me, so by having that scene and those lines is Joss trying to say that the Beatles are so good that they are still widely known 500 years from now? That'd be pretty sweet. Is Joss a big Beatles fan?

I don't know if they know about the Beatles in the 'verse, maybe it was a throwaway from Joss.

I am sure they will be part of our history for a long time. Along with Elvis, Shakespeare, and many more. One can only imagine what type of audio equipment they will have then. Can you imagine sliping two tiny round plugs in your ears and start listening to Janis Joplin crying out while walking down the street, and no one even knows you oblivious to the sounds around you. Their going to have to pass some laws about that. If the police or fire department come screaming down the street you will need to know. So I bet emergency vehicles will have a transmiter to turn off your ear sets so you will know they are approaching. You probably have a remote on belt to turn it back on set it to the song you were listening to. Maybe the emergency personal can actually broadcast into you set so you who and where their coming from.

I don't think it's necessarily that the Beatles are still remembered 500 years from now, but that the crew of Serenity, although working many illegal jobs, are very well educated. Maybe it's just because we only follow the crew, but I haven't picked up on any references from now that didn't come out of the mouth of Mal and Co.
Or... perhaps their knowledge isn't considered "high society" (like Shakespeare's plays back in his day).

Well that probably is the answer. The Beatles are for the masses. In Ariel the who's who danced to something from the 18th century. So us shmuckes who sweat for a living listen to Beach Boys or Hank Williams.

Really, you could get a hundred answers for this, and it's almost all speculation unless it comes from an official printed material or Joss.
