From the Serenity: Official Visual Companion (page 30), "500 years from now, the Beatles will still be remembered, though they will often be misspelled." So it's official - the 'Verse knows the Beatles.

IIRC In the Serenity Visual companion there's a bit by Joss about music where he mentions the Beatles, so the quote is deliberate.

What about that line from Jaynestown. Jayne says to one of the mudders: You fought the law huh? Isn't that a reference to a song? It goes something like this:

I fought the law
and the law won
I needed money
cause I had none
I fought the law
and the law won

I'm sure people will kick me for not knowing the name of the song or who its by. But it did go through my head when he sid that line.

Shiny. I think Joss throws in stuff from everywhere; here's one I noticed.

Hamlet trying to teach R&G how to play the flute; says it's "easy as lying".

Kaylee, trying to explain the train job to Simon, also says it's "easy as lying".

And I've never heard that expression anywhere else. At any rate, I like the idea of Shakespeare in the 'verse.

gotta 'fess up - I didn't know the Beatles quote, never heard that particular song. My wife told me about it.

From the delivery, I don't think Mal necessarily knows-- he's just wishing a little encouragement on their gadjet.

But Wash, does, obviously, and picks up on it. Another cool thing about WAsh....

I always thought that it was kind of a mist of time saying, people know it (maybe said to children) but people don't know the origin, like many old wives tales and nursery rhymes we have.

but if Joss says the Beatles are well known then I guess I'll go with him I did always like my idea though as it showed links to our world but still showed how different they were.

Actually, in situations like that, military or otherwise, codes are often used incase someone is listening in on the transmission. The device they dropped was called a Cry Baby (aptly named because it broadcasts a distress signal) so the code for deployment was "Cry baby cry." Well to keep up with the cover, Wash obviously couldn't say 'Acknowledged' or something similar, so his code phrase to indicate he was initiating was "Make your mama sigh". It's common to use lines from movies, songs and even poetry in code phrases.

Though it's possible Mal and Wash didn't know exactly where it was from, atributing it, as EVILBUNGLE did, to something akin to an old wives tale or nursery rhyme and the like, I think it was more probable that they did.

I hope that all made sense. I just got off a 3 hour conference call and my mind is fried.
