Alas! This was Pre-Firefly. 1999ish?
If only I could go back in time, think of all the people I could pre-convert before the show even airs!!

But they were very nice, and she got the job and I'm sure she's doing well. She was a very clever girl.

Yeah this guy handed me his badge. It was a bit disturbing, but he was pleasant enough.

*Comes in with arms fulls of balloons and crepe. Waves her magic Presidental Wand and the crepe festoons itself around the room, the balloons float nearish to the ceiling. Heads into the kitchen and comes back with a large and chocolately cake, hand decorated with frosting flowers. (I have a few learned skills from my bakery days!)*
Attention, everyone! Today is cozen's birthday. He didn't want his own Birthday Thread, so we're gonna celebrate in here.
Happy Birthday cozen! Many happy returns of the day!
*Waves her wand again, and music starts.*
Let the partying begin!

What? No special thread?
But where am I going to put this enormous present then? It's too heavy to load onto a multiple topic thread. Oh well, I'll take it back to the store... Happy Birthday anyway.

To my mom goes all the credit, for the 9 months of hemmerhoids and all, not to mention the labour and the pain of birthing. I've never quite got around to the concept of receiving accolades and gifts just for surviving another circle around Sol. Whereas, it has always made sense to me to gift my mother for all that she went through to help me become me, for whatever that's worth. So, really peeps, honour yer moms' on yer birthday, cuz it's the logical path, okay?
Here's cozen's feel good story for today. So, it being my birthday, it means it's the last day I have to renew the licence on my gorram car. Naturally, the Ministry of Transport office nearest my house is, without my previous knowledge, closed down for good. Mutter, mutter, whine. On the sidewalk outside the shuttered office is an Ukrainian ex-pat, 70-ish, licence renewal forms in hand, pacing circles about the sidewalk with the aid of his cane. In broken English, he asks me if it's possible that I might drive him to the next Office, on account of he has no gorram clue where said office is. Well, of course I agree to do so, I mean, really, how can I not?
Wow. It's 20 minutes, in traffic, to the next nearest facility, and in that time this old gent brushes off his horrid past in the bad old USSR, and focuses on how fortunate he's been to escape to find a new, comfortable life in wonky Canadaland. Point is, he did so, in his broken English, without judgement, without anger. It's kinda hard for me to properly explain this.
Context: whilst my own dad was alive, I never failed to thank him, once a year at least, for what he did to bring our family to this admittedly flawed, but nonetheless better-than-anywhere-else-I've-ever-experienced land.
I'm not articulating this well. Guess you had to be there, I dunno.
It's been a great day for me.
Please excuse the maudlin, if you will. It's just kinda weird that all of the above should occur on a random anniversary, is all.

Loaf away!

Well, YAY for the cozenmomma, then!
But, you must let us have our day to celebrate you! That's what birthdays are all about anyway, giving others a chance to show their love and appreciation. It's really not about you, it's about US! lol.
That is a touching story, thanks for sharing.
