This is really a rhetorical question but can soneboady tell me why a movie like Saw 3 can make $34M in a weekend and Serenity barely gets $10M? What's wrong with this picture?

It's the same reason the gladiator games were so popular in ancient Rome. Things really haven't changed at all.

But the ancient Romans didn't have Serenity, I bet they'd have gone to see Serenity!

I have seen and love both, so I have no bias.
The reason Saw 3 is doing so well is because people love violence. And it doesn't get much more violent than a Saw movie.
Also, the incredibly twisted traps draw a crowd.

because people knew what to expect:
blood horror...sell tickets.

Actually sci-fi sells tickets too, but the name 'Serenity' was too vague...
it wasn't an accident that Lucas named his movie 'Star Wars'

If Joss had named his film 'Space transport' it probably would have done better....

(and why did you post this to the Buffy forum? Just curious)

I was thinking the exact same thing when I was watching that movie!
Except my thoughts were more along the lines of Why are there three of these stupid movies and Serenity still doesn't have a sequel??!!

I dunno...I definitely am never impressed by those movies whose whole purpose seems to be to gross people out.
Oh, and I also didn't get why they had pictures of like teeth and stuff on all the posters, but there was nothing involving teeth in the movie! Was it just that they found a kinda icky picture of them and thought it would attract people to go see it?

Well, I personally don't know what the big deal is with the Saw movies. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good horror movie now and again. I actually saw the 1st one and thought, 'Bit too gory for my taste, but I like a good scary movie none the less.' But to make 2 more sequels to it? pfft! Everytime I show Serenity, people ask me how in the world they missed it and they would have seen it a couple times in the theater, easy. *sigh* Worlds gone to pot. People just wanna see the lastest greatests deboweling, I guess.

Everytime I watch a lukewarm film blow away the box office take of Serenity I want to cry.

I mean really, was Tokyo Drift better than Serenity? As far as numbers go it was. And don't get me started on saw 3. I sat in my seat and poked all kinds of holes in jigsaws plan. There were far too many events that could not have been planned for to produce the ultimate test at the end. Even Saw 1, which was a good film, wasn't entirely orginal. The concept of sawing off a limb to save ones life had already been explored in the first mad max film from 1979 and later in the Watchman comics in 1985.

I'm digressing. This has naught to do with box office takes.

I think that if Joss had written Serenity to be a prequel tale about thievery rather than trying to take the story forward from Objects in Space, he would have done better.

I think Joss's test will be the box office numbers for Wonder Woman.

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.
