Dr. Who episode homage to Firefly episode 'Out of Gas' ??

I am going to sound like such a geek by answering all these. Ah well, I guess thta's just me.
Russell T Davies (the show runner for Doctor Who and Torchwood) is a fan of Joss Whedon's work ut I don't believe that this was a tribute to Out of Gas as it was written by Steven Moffatt anyways!
The creators said the spaceship was designed to look like a key to go with the clockwork robots theme. Definitely NOT an insect.
The Rose spin-off got the greenlight at the BBC but Russell T Davies pulled the plug when he feared it wouldn't work. Billie Piper has said she wants to move on anyway although from a recent interview on British TV she sounded like she may already be missing the crew and cast of the show and possibly regretting not being involved. Noel Clarke who played Mickey is one of the writers signed to Torchwood.
The Sarah Jane Investigates series has gone into production and is not based on K9 and Company, RTD was never involved in that.
Torchwood is a very different show to Doctor Who and I must admit I love the first two episodes and the behind the scenes shows that came on at almost 3 in the morning and lots of folks missed!

Speaking of behind the scenes stuff, did the US audiences get Dr Who Confidential? I'm still kinda disappointed we didn't get them in Australia, as they sound like they woulda been worth seeing.

Some people have complained about there being horses in Firefly. Like how could people 500 years in the future take horses on spaceships to a new solar system.
Horses fit perfectly into Firefly - When you terraform a planet (presumably lifeless) you change it's environment to suit Earth life, animals, people, plants etc. any mineral deposits are still in existence of course but there are no fossil fuels - on the Core planets there's enough wealth to fund expensive transport technologys but on the outer planets you need a cheap, self sustaining technology therefore horses, mules, donkeys, oxen and the like. Perfectly logical :)

Hardly surprising RTD was`nt involved in `K9 and Company`. It was so long ago he was probably still in school at the time!
As far as the Rose spin off is concerned, It would probably have looked to much like Torchwood to work. Be interesting to see what this Philip Pulman costume drama Billie is now working on develops in to.

This made me laugh because I had to check when K9 and Co aired to work it out and RTD would have been 17 or 18 a the time as he's 42 now! I really thought it had come out later than 1981.
I have only heard one of the Sarah Jane audio books so far but I thought it was worth listening and I have bought another to listen to before too long too. SO the character has stuck around pretty well its not just RTD who has ressurected her for the new fans.

Elisebeth Sladen has actually played Sara Jane in a number of things as well as the audio books. In the years after the cancelation of the old series, Dr Who appeared occasionally in radio series form with various people reprising their own roles. There was even a straight to video version of a Dr Who novel called `Downtime` which featured several ex Dr Who characters (including Sara Jane) joining forces to save the world without the Doctor being present. Considering its low budget its production values were at least up to the standard of the old TV series.
It just goes to show that, with a large active fanbase, just because some idiot decides to cancel a show then it will still continue in some form no matter what.

Ok, I'm in the dark as to what this "Torchwood" business is! I live in the US and haven't heard of it. I wonder if Sci-Fi will pick it up, as well?

Torchwood is a new TV series from the showrunner of Doctor Who. Its set in the same continuity etc. and the name came from an anagram of Doctor Who which was used initially to disguise the scripts in transit during the Christopher Ecclestone season.
In season 2 with David Tennant it was established that Torchwood was set up at the behest of Queen Victoria to counter any threat by aliens to the british Empire after she encountered the Doctor and a werewolf. At the end of season 2 the London based branch of Torchwood played a major role in the series.
The new series is not based in London though. It is based in Cardiff the capital city of Wales and is a small band of do-gooders led by Captain Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman who was in season 1 of Doctor Who) an enigmatic alien time traveller who appears to be American but was an RAF pilot in WW2 and has not aged as a result of his time travelling and fighting the scum of the universe. They are based in Cardiff as in the show's mythology there is a time rift running through the city centre which draws a lot of alien attention - think of it as the Hellmouth for aliens. (Plus production is based there so its easier!)
The show began last Sunday with a double episode introducing us to Torchwood Cardiff and new recruit Gwen Cooper played by Eve Miles. The next episode will be shown tonight. Its more adult than Doctor Who which is based firmly on the family market so there is slightly stronger language and raunchier themes than Doctor Who.
That's about it I think - except to say I think its been amazing so far and I am REALLY enjoying it and looking forward to it continuing. Oh and it IS available as a dowload if you search hard enough I found it and I already had the episodes recorded.

ps there is also a behind the scenes show called Torchwood De-Classified which runs at around 10 minutes per episode and alsoo available for download if you look hard enough!
