Hey.
I doubt there will be any other hindu browncoats, but in case there are any, just wanted to wish them a happy diwali. For non-hindu folk that is the new year for the hindu calender and its a fun time, with not just religious ceremonies, but lamps and lights(its the festival of lights) and fireworks and all sorts of stuff

Thank you all for the wishes! I appreciate it! Happy Diwali back to you, and nice image verse exploer appreciate it! I'll probably just hang out with my parents tomorrow, don't really do much but hopefully something nice. Will be buying some sweets, check out this page to see what indian sweets are. Unfortuantely I can't eat msot of them b/c Im allergic to nuts etc, but for those that are not should check these out if there is an indian sweet shop in your town.

I have a friend who lived in India for about half a year. She shared a dessert with us once that I cannot remember the name of. It was sweet, like a sponge cake but very light, and was soaked in rose syrup.
Delightful stuff!
Of course what sweets usually aren't?

Even though I'm late, Happy Diwali, Kurya!

I have had an Indian sweet dish my Mom prepared one year.. it was delicious! I don't remember the name of it, but I'll never forget the taste!

Happy Diwali back attcha Kurya!

Doubt no more! There is at LEAST one more Hindu in our ranks... ME!

Though I may have been born a garden-variety white dude, I'm Hindu through and through. I married a Bengali (which I highly recommend btw, marrying Bengalis...) 'bout eight years back, but have been a practicing Hindu since well before then...

Will second your sentiments that Diwali is LOTS of fun... good, noisy fun... and India eNews said there was a 21-foot tall Kali put up this year in Kolkata, near Salt Lake!

...AND on top of all that too, us Bengali-types just got done with one of our other favorites a couple of weeks ago... Durga Puja! I LOVE that one. Lots of presents! Look that one up too, you guys.

So on that note, I give you my Vijaya Pranam, Kurya, and to the rest of you shiny folk too!

Rose, I'm pretty sure what you ate was a "Gulab Jamun"... (makes Homer Simpson noises)...
and just so you know, seein' as how it's in your name and all... "Gulab" means "Rose".

thank you again for the wishes! Well i didnt do much yesterday, but went to a sweet shop and bought some indian deserts, and managed to get ones without nuts. Oh and my mom bought some fudge.. i almost finised half of the sweets yesterday... hmm well have to work off that somehow :S

And went out to an indian restaurant with my parents.

*sigh* I have to clean up my appartment today though :S

I just saw the post above... wooohoo one more hindu! Even if a white guy ;) Kidding... that is amazing. and married a bengali and covnerted eh? wow. Those bengalis sooo wacky and just plain intellectual :P

Actually there is a bengali-canadian in my lab and he told me he didnt know of Diwali, it tends to be celebrated all over except in the East of India it seems... and durga puja yeah i have heard of that, we dont celebrate it too much I think. Im of Gujarati Descent btw. so well its nice to meet a fellow hindu.

ETA 2: when you said this " Kolkata, near Salt Lake! " you dont mean Salt Lake city right? hehe.

ETA3: is your wife a browncoat too?(not jsut brown skin *snickers*

She's a definate Browncoat, my wife. She hasn't yet seen EVERY episode, or finished the movie (we started it one day, but had to cut short), but I'm kind of saving it (the movie) for when she's in the right mood to appreciate it fully and/or get the full impact of it. Can't wait for that day...

She'd lived all over India before comin' over here to the states with me. Speaks Gujarati among others. All my in-laws know Diwali. Hey, who'll pass up an excuse to celebrate? No us...

Yes, Bengalis are notoriously sentimental and artistic too...

Glad you guys had some good food and sweets to celebrate... my faves are the ones with/made from coconut (more Homer Simpson noises)...

There is a burrough in Kolkata named "Salt Lake", that's actually built around a salt lake... no connection to Utah (that I know of anyways).

Anyways, thanks again Prakash!

P.S. sort of on topic... if American (English) and Chinese cultures were the two dominant survivors from 'Earth That Was' that had the most to do with shaping the Verse, I'm guessing Indian culture would be close behind, at least in the top 5... it certainly influenced the wardrobe department (just look at some of those gorgeous saris that Inara wears!).
