Cool! Well I unfortuantely do not know any indian language only a bit of hindi. :( I should really learn it and Guajrati too, jsut dont ahve the time now :(.
And in terms of Indian influences, yeah I would imagine it would. Besides the fact that indians are 1/6 the world population, Bollywood movies are watched by numerous non-indians. In fact it may have an audiance larger than hollywood, b/c it is watched apparently throughout the middle east, turkey, northen Africa, in south east asia, in eastern Europe and even Russia. I read soemwhere that they had a Raj Kapoor exhibition in Moscow one time. So that alone means indian culture reaches out. And in mainstream western media, bollywood and idian culture is slowly appearing more and more.
In terms of indian influence in the series, you can look at some of the costumes worn in Shindig, like Atherton Wing wears Indian garb. Also looking at Inara's shuttle you see indian influences all over, I think that stone/wood relief near her bed is Indian, its hard to tell.
And the name House Madrassa, its funny, madrassia is Arabic for school(and in modern contexts religious schools for Islam). Its funny that Joss used the name Madrassa for an academy of Companions or high class Escorts.
One could venture that as the series progressed, more of the fusion of cultures would ave been explroed(and more eastern asian characters could have been seen).
In terms of your wife, just sit her down for 2 hours each night and watch 3 episodes a night from start to finish. You can tell her another desi recommended it :P Not that should wouldnt be willing to watch it ;).
