this was a very impressively thorough response, but I have a question if you'll forgive my lack of knowledge and useless curiosity:

the two "prongs", if you will, on ping2 are pointing upwards [\/], and on a lot of the fan products, they are facing down [/\]. Do you know why this is? or is it just someone's ignorance.

and it there any significant difference between the ning2jing4 and ping2jing4

It's just a stylistic difference. The up [\/] is the typical form, but, for example, if you use MingLiu font, you only get down [/\].

The difference in meaning is quite subtle. They're both about tranquility and stillness. I know that a peaceful person or a calm ocean is pingjing, and a quiet night or serene life is ningjing.
