"The Gift": Was is scary enough?

When the ritual was preformed and the dimensions started overlapping, the sunnydale town hall turned into what looked like an alien pod. A dragon appeared in the air... what do you think? Was this scary enough? Was it supposed to be scary? They were definately foriegn. Thoughts?

The direction was great, the music was spot on, but the tension hadn't been built up enough for me, Glory was a wuss, as Gods go, and the payoff seemed less than genuine, again, for me.
Well done, but if the series had ended there, I would have written it off as a promising show that sputtered out in it's last season.

I will be contested by many on these observations, I know...

CHRIS? You serious? Have to totally disagree with you there (OK - i know i already did on the '3 things you'd change bout s7' thread, but i have to defend season 5 here!
IMHO it was easily one of the better series. Along with s2, n s3 (for overall story arcs - s4, 6 & 7 had many excellent individual eps- but weak arcs by my recknin').
And a weak ending!?!?!?!?
I thought the Gift to be a far superior ending to Chosen (although Chosen did rock!).

Scary? No. The only Buffy ep that ever scared me was "Conversations with Dead People." Dawn's portion of that ep gives me the wiggins every time I watch it. The Gift was good enough.

Was it better than Chosen? I don't know. It was different. I think Glory was a better evil than the First. At least Glory could punch Buffy into next week. The First couldn't even touch anyone. I, however, wouldn't have wanted Buffy's death to be the end of the series. I was much happier with her getting the chance to be one of a crowd instead of the chosen one; moral and ethical ramifications of that decision aside.

Well Buffy isn't really a horror show, it's not meant to make you jump out of your seat or scream or anything like that. The scene shows that dimensions are melting together fine I think if that's what you're asking.

The real point of the scene though is the interaction between buffy and dawn and then buffy's self sacrifice. And I think that was done beautifully.

yeah, I was pretty much going to say that, it didn't occur to me it was scary, just a bit like "oh s***, she's got to stop it quickly before it's too late"

The first was supremely evil, able to touch peeps where it counted- in their fears and weaknesses! And Buffy couldn't touch IT!
Glory was a narcissistic comedian by comparison.
The First and Angelus were the only two big bads that ever actually scared me...

I'm a horror movie fanatic so it didn't scare me one bit. But I have a bone to pick with this one reply that said "The Gift" was weak. How could you come to a conclusion like that? That ep was by far the best. I can hear the music and remember the things that went through me when Buffy sacrificed herself and get all teary eyed. Just by the fucking music! I know I'm not the only one. Someone back me up here!

I've never been a big fan of Glory's, but I thought "The Gift" was an excellent episode. Maybe not exactly scary, but then, I don't think it was intended to scare in the "jump out of your seat" sense. To me, however, it was one of the most moving episodes. The only one that tops it is "The Body".

I really didnâ€™t or hadnâ€™t paid attention to the town hall scene when the dimensions were overlapping when I watched the gift. Through that whole episode I only noticed how Buffy seem so done with it all. When she finally sacrificed herself it seemed like she did it with an enthusiasm that was somewhat disturbing to me. She threw herself off that tower so completely and without reservation. The character Buffy wanted it to be all over.

Willow should have not used magicâ€™s to bring her back and season 5 should have been that last BtVS episode, but the writers had other things in mind so we got two extra seasons.
