Neko and I have been talking about what the Zoe coat is made of. We have no idea. It doesn't really drape like leather, but kinda looks like it. Anyway, Tristan, you probably know more about fabrics and the like, and in case you want to give it a shot, here are pictures of the very beautiful coat:

DanicingNeko...yes, it isleather...and you need one...it would go great with everything you own...you need a leather Browncoat....
PR...huh. Never thought of that. Her coat looks like a duster of some sort ("really Tristan? never woulda thunk it, genius!" 
), which means either a fine wool or some sort of cotton duck...it may be something I'll tackle down the road aways...thank you for the photos!

I thought it looked like some kind of heavy cotton! Raw cotton, maybe? Does that exist or am I thinking of raw silk?

PR, "duck" is actually cotton...sort of like canvas...it has a very plain weave and is usually waterproofed.
I was thinking of building a coat like that for my Independent soldier outft.

*points out where she lives is between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn* (For those of you going "HUH?" I live where it NEVER gets cold enough to need a leather coat.) Plus, much too heavy to make it useful here.

Cotton Duck! (Why doesn't my mind function on simple things like that.) Kept trying to think of it -- but the only word my brain would flip to is "canvas." 
A part of me still votes on some sort of ultrasuede/man-made item that's brushed to look like suede or something, but yeah...it might be duck from some of the pictures....like I said before...It would be easier to persuade me to spend money on Zoe's one
...Not that I need a duster like that (I *heart* mom).

So far, attempts to create a good-looking version of the Browncoat in cloth have failed miserably. I spent the last two days and about $150.00 on sueded cloth...and none of the attempts look any good. Mostly in the collar area, but the cloth itself does not lend itself well to making a coat. I will probabyly try a few more, assuming I can find some decent cloth, but I have pretty much given up right now. I'll be experimenting further with the Zoe vest next, and will hopefully have that available in the next few weeks. (This week will be taken up with moving the ex out of the house) I have one or two more local fabric stores to hit, so hopefully I will find something that works.
The more I think about it, the more likely I am to just stick to leather Bronwcoats. In looking at the photos of Zoe's coat, though, I am very intrigued. I am pretty sure that was her coat from the war, or a very close copy of what she wore. As I am interested in creating an Independents soldier's outfit, it would stand to reason that I would need to make the coat, too...so, I think instead of the cloth Browncoat, I will make this type of coat instead...also in a male and female version. I will be hitting the photo sites and re-watching Firefly (darn!) to see the coat better. Thank you all for suggesting this...I shall endeavour to create one!

As to seeing it on a model...I, uh...seem to have lost my in-house model. 
I was planning on making one that fit my sister-in-law, but it may be a spell before I can get pictures of her in the coat online. I will try to get it done quickly! Or, hey! I could model it for y'all! I'd just have to pad the proper places...

As far as the fabric it's made out of, I am pretty sure it's in the cotton family. Judging by the way it falls and the way it creases/wrinkles leads me in that direction.
FloralBunny, I understand. Though how someone ever convinced you to do something you did not want to do is beyond me!
Thank you all again! The next thing I hope to post will be the Zoe vest, followed shortly after by the Kaylee jacket. I have not given up completely on the idea of a cloth Browncoat, just a bit "over it" at the moment following the failure.
