does anyone know the pinyin for the character on Inara's hour glass? I was watching the commentary (for Serenity), and it's suppose to mean "a short interval of time". Yet, I still have no idea what it's suppose to be.

*..*_~

It's written yú, or yu2, in hanyu pinyin.

You can see more of the written Chinese from Firefly on this page of my site:

Hello Ying,

I had a look at your great site listing the characters used in Firefly.

However I was puzzled by the phrase
(hand)dares not increase (price).

Does it actually mean anything? Is
it a punishment for embezzling or something?

Regards and thanks for your effort

I don't know what it means. That first character especially looks really odd, so I'm just guessing. It could be some old-fashioned crime branding/tatooing--they've got duelling on Persephone after all.

thanks for time.

I am delighted that they choose to use Mandarin as they have done. I hope more people become interested in it. :)
