What others have said is true... The Boba Fett figure did indeed exist prior to Empire, and was introduced for the holiday special.
I also remember the toy offer and the whole hoopla about replacing the shooting missile on his back. I remember because I sent in for the offer three times to get the figure, but I had apparently missed the deadline! The first two times I got a Bossk figure instead, but the third time was a charm. Hey, I was like six, okay...

Guess I shouldn't tell you that my husband barbequed his 1979 boba fett action figure ( without realizing it's value and all) when he was a kid. He's kicking himself now of course.
