Recurring character preferences?

Haven't done a thorough check to see if this thread is redundant, but I was just wonderin': who (aside from the regulars, of course) do y'all wanna see again (in a movie, new series, novel, whatever)?

For myself, there's more than one, but (as you might guess from my chosen handle) I'd really like to see the Sheriff from TTJ in another story. I know this ep isn't a favourite of most, but for a script slapped together in 2 days, it's brilliant! To top it off, Gregg Henry was an inspired choice for the Sheriff.

Whadda y'all think?

I like Gregg Henry tremendously and would certainly not object to seeing him in the movie. He did a great job with such a small part in TTJ.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'd love to see more of the merc captain from Out Of Gas. Intriguing, charismatic character (even though he did shoot our Cap'n Tightpants! ). In many ways, I think of him as Mal, but without the residual decency. I'd love to see the two have to team up against some overarching foe/peril/thing.

I'm going with Niska- I mean, he is such a great villain, and he did get away at the end of War Stories- As I said in another post (I forget which one) he's the kind of character that would come back again and again untill he got what he wanted (Mal's head on a platter) or was killed- If the series is ever picked up again, I dont think we've seen the last of Niska, let's just say that-

I'm gonna have to say Saffron. She's funny, sexy, strong and deadly. Good combo. I think she'd make a good recurring character if the show goes back on the air or in the movie.

Do I only get to pick one?

Well, I loved Gregg Henry in Payback with Mel. It was great to see him play a good guy in TTJ, even if he was an Alliance flunky. And there was definitely a moment of recognition between him and Mal at the end, kindred souls, good men fighting the good fight kinda thing. I liked how he handled Inara. Definitely professional but recognising a beautiful lady (emphasis on the lady) without acting a fool. But smart enough to not be taken in totally by her presence. He still had his deputy run her records. He seemed to be the kind of guy who treat all women like ladies and everyone with the same professional courtesy. A real gentleman in the true sense of the word.

Sir Warrick and the older fellow that "rescued" Kaylee in Shindig. Another real gentleman who knows how to work the system and still be a gentleman. I can see Mal doing more business with him. AND Badger, of course.

Atherton might have an interesting story arc creeping about stalking Inara. Or at least an episode.

Niska, definitely. That part in TTJ when he shows Mal, Zoe and Jayne the guy he's just tortured and then blithely goes on to mention that it's his wife's nephew and he's going to have to listen to her complain at dinner... FUNNY & CHILLING. At the same time. Not to mention his cheerful creepiness from War Stories. "Morbid and creepifying..." Indeed!

Saffron is charming in a psychopathic, sexy, totally unpredictable sort of way. I want to know what the deal is with her hubby. Ummm, the rich one from Trash, I mean.

Gosh, there are quite a few bit characters that are interesting enough to see some more. That's one of Joss's talents. He makes all of his characters REAL PEOPLE, and real people are interesting.

AND HOW CAN WE FORGET ... THE CHICKEN. THE TRUE STAR OF FIREFLY!!!

I almost forgot Jubal!

I'm gonna go with Atherton Wing. Fresh off of his humiliation at Mal's hands (inept as they may often be...), he seems like the type to hold a grudge and squeeze the life out of it.

And he also seems the type to have Alliance ties. Might make an interesting appearance or 2.

I just know there's hell for this. But i liked Badger. He had enough scoundrel to dislike him, but at least he had enough interesting quirks to make him likeable.
He doesn't like being looked down on, he likes being respected by those he lives around, and he has a code that although shallow, protects not only him but the community around him. He knows he's a rat, but he's a rat that knows where he stands and wouldn't threaten the community he's a part of, because even the most selfish person realizes their own worth is dependant on how they're percieved by the populace (especially in his line of work).

Well, yeah, I'd definitely agree with you on Jubal...I mean, Niska and the chicken have both already had two guest spots, and he's only had one :)

Seriously, though, I was just thinking about another thread (the whole "galaxy vs. star system" thing) and it occurred to me that the potential difference between a series like ST (FTL/interstellar travel) and Firefly(MAYBE sublight and a single system) is that recurring characters and revisited places are more likely over the long haul, and I'd personally like that. Also, ST(TOS and TNG, at least) had as a mandate "to boldly go etc." whereas Mal & Co. only push on to new places when he decides that "it's gettin' kinda crowded in my sky". And with only 70-odd worlds to choose from, the writers have a chance to add depth to the story-world, rather than make it the "forehead of the week".

Just a few idle thoughts. Like most fans, I'll be happy as long as they come back.
