[I suppose if I describe the plot, SOMEONE on fff will know, so.....story starts out with some hideously rich father having an island made-out of nanotechnology, I think-for his daughter's birthday, then there was a "book", written as her life progressed, reflecting what happened in her life]"
I'm pretty sure you mean "The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephenson. There were some amazing ideas in that one. My favorites from that book:
1) The primer.
2) Dust-repellent clothing.
3) Mediatronic tattoos, toilet paper, walls, etc.
4) The robot horse as light as a briefcase.
5) Internal sound system.

Strictly speaking, not the central character. And he was only a prisoner (in effect) for a week or so before he was killed.
With any technology you have to expect the occasional glitch.

I can't believe no one has said the starship Heart of Gold from Hitchhiker's Guide. It has it all! You could go anywhere, do anything, go back in time, foreward in time, and there would always be a very cheerful central computer to help you out. Man, that'd be sweet. Especially if it was like the movie version and had that thing that could make anything you were craving. I want that ship!
