I think it would have been a better religion if two things happened:
1 They stuck to what it said in the books, not what symbols they could steal from pagans or what ideologies they could make up on the side.
2 They preserved all of the books, not just the ones they liked, and taught their flocks to think for themselves and make up their own minds on which books should be listened to.
That's the Magdaline story of course, call her a protitute for no apparent reason, have the majority believe it for the next few hundred years. The only reason it is possible is that people care more about what they are told the bible says than what it actually says.
Ok, I'd like to close the rant on my thoughts about Mary Magdaline because I brought her up.
So I figure could they have been married, sure why not, but I really don't care.
Personally I'm more interested in her importance than her marital status, The DaVinci Code and other such works imply that the only important part of her was her womb, I doubt that.
She gets mentioned more than several of The Twelve combined, as near as we can tell she was an important figure in early christianity, she was the first to see and the first person Jesus came to and the first person who believed in the resurrection. Obviously she's important, I want to know why.
I suppose it could be that Jesus was having sex with her, but I don't think you get the status of importance in a religious movement if the only thing of value you do is screw.

Hey Chris (not so cynical to me)
There's a really good reason why I have the posing name Magdalena/Magdalene and it's very much like your views (hope you don't mind me editing ...'twas a wee bit long...)
I understood what Phoenix Rose said about feeling sad - I often feel that way when I see what the 'powers-that-be' in the early church (& at key points in it's history) have done to MM, and I too feel that it would have been no big deal if Jesus had married her - but I see her importance as much more than a womb-man (in the literal sense of the word woman)!
I will try so hard not to rant and rave here - coz we'd need a new thread I think - but suffice to say I love that we can be dancing at Stonehenge with our pink bits exposed to the chocolately goodness and at risk of being spat on by llamas one minute - then discussing deeply felt theological topics the next!
My posting name is to remind me the power of one woman and that 2,000 years later I will do my best to make sure her place is not diminished in my own understanding... even if not in everybody's!

Side note: My actual name has some of the coolest symbolism ever. My parents chose Rose because (so they say) the rose is the symbol of the coming Buddha. I thought that was fantastic. Then I found out it's also the symbol of the Divine Feminine, the lost Goddess, and the Magdalene! I have the shiniest name ever!

Thanks for the support, T On the subject of my banners, they are all available in the blue sun room and everyone is free to use them if they like them. I have my own personalised one, but I tend to switch when I post more than once in a thread. Variety and shameless self promotion are the spices of life.
